Ayn Rand

I'm currently slogging through The Fountainhead. I had a douche of a teacher in college that really pressured us to read Atlas Shrugged, so I avoided it. I think we watched the film in class. Much later, I read Anthem which is pretty short. I'm finding Fountainhead to be grueling. I don't like the characters or the thinly veiled pontificating from Rand. It's hard to get into the story when you're constantly critical of it.

On FB, Patton Oswalt posted something about Atlas Shrugged as being the Bible of assholes and that sparked a huge thread about Liberals being hypocritical when complaining about Republicans using hateful language.

Someone posted this gem:

Quote:‎"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - Alan P. Scott

that is a gem. good on you for the slog. I just don't have the patience.
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
