Matter by Iain M. Banks
#1
Finally! Another "Culture" novel! Big, big space opera with ruminations on class and the individual. Packed with aliens of every stripe and psuedopod, vast worlds natural and artificial, machine-evolved humans, barbarians barely at the steam level, World Gods, self-aware spaceships with wry senses of humour, and some well-wrought violence.

The usual good time
In the Tudor Period, Fencing Masters were classified in the Vagrancy Laws along with Actors, Gypsys, Vagabonds, Sturdy Rogues, and the owners of performing bears.
