Hairspray
#1
It's the movie version of the Broadway musical, which started out life as a regular movie by John Waters. John Waters could have saved us a lot of time and trouble by just making the original movie a musical. But then we would have had Divine as the mom instead of John Travolta. Decisions Decisions Decisions. John Waters does appear in the musical version as the neighborhood flasher.

At the beginning the movie had nice subversive edge, but it quickly vanished into the morality of even fat people need to be loved. Which gave way to the integration issue. Who knew Hairspray was going to be a musical about integration for Dance Shows? I thought it was just going to be about John Travolta in a women's fat suit. In that, I was not disappointed. Plus, there was Christopher Walken as the Dad. Who doesn't want their Dad to be Christopher Walken? Especially around Halloween?

There were lots of songs but I only liked the first one, Good Morning Baltimore. The film had a lot of the racism cliches. As a matter of fact it had a lot cliches. It was also kind of dumb and after it's initial subversiveness, it got very soft.

We all just need to learn to look beyond the surface to the beauty inside. I couldn't see it.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
