Sigur Ros - "Heima" Free Screening Mon 11/19 - thatguy - 11-06-2007 Hmmmm, where to post this. It's about a movie, about a band, that's about to come out on DVD.... Anyway, I stumbled across this link today (maybe it belongs in Doom Links...): http://promotions.sfweekly.com/promos/f ... way=791174 If you're not familiar with Sigur Ros, I recommend you visit the Heima site and watch the trailer for the movie: http://www.hvarf-heim.com/ --TG - El Dingo - 11-06-2007 Thanks! I really like this band. Sort of like an ethereal Led Zeppelin, or a Heavy Metal Enya, or the soundtrack to Hell freezing over or Heaven engulfed in flames. A review... - thatguy - 11-28-2007 Well, I'm finally getting around to follow up. I came down from Santa Cruz. Amoeba Music, which was promoting the show, recommended getting there about an hour early and to bring a print out of the RSVP confirmation. I go to SF around 6:30p, got some food. Just before 7p I found The Mezzanine" club which is behind the old US Mint, right down the street from a closed defunct club called "The 6th St. Rendezvous" that I played at about 20 years ago. That was a pretty crummy experience as I remember and I have to say that it was a little nicer... When I turned the corner in front of the The Mezannine, there was a line down the block and around the corner. This was over an hour before the doors were supposed to open! (Remember, this is for a screening of a DVD). I chatted with a couple of people in line around me. One was a film editor whose been working on the documentaries that are going to be released with the latest re-release of the Indiana Jones TV series. They never checked for RSVPs and let in pretty much anybody... We finally got inside and the place was packed. All the seats in front of the big screens were taken. Luckily, upstairs there were separate seating areas and I found one room with two large screen TVs, lots of couches and ottomans - very comfortable and not nearly as crowded. After the "thanks to our sponsors", etc, the video starts and we're launched on a travelogue of Iceland. The band toured their homeland, doing free concerts in several locations including a tent-camp where protesters were upset about an Alcoa dam. The footage was all very beautiful, the music really ethereal. There was some "talk with the artists" moments, but mostly it was a journey through Iceland. That and the Anthony Bourdain show make me want to visit there sometime... The cinematography reminded me a little of "Rivers and Tides" the Andy Goldsworthy film. All in all, I'd recommend checking it out... --TG |
