The Joke's Over by Ralph Steadman - Drunk Monk - 06-18-2007

Steadman's view on HST is a little self laudatory, but he reveals a lot of their personal letters and faxes, and HST's humor shows through clearly. It's an interesting read if you're a fan of gonzo, not overly revealing, but amusing nonetheless. I read an uncorrected reader's copy, so the pics weren't nailed down and this detracts a lot from Steadman's work. He's a fair writer but a much better illustrator. I would have ditched HST the first time he maced me, but Steadman saw it through, resulting in one of the finest collaborations in modern literature. I'm still a huge fan of gonzo, HST and Steadman. This was a pleasant memoir, but it could have been much deeper. For example, HST's suicide is barely addressed.
