Manu Chao @ BGC 5/30/7 - Drunk Monk - 06-04-2007 A very fun dance band. Manu was backed by a Dead-formation six piece. He sings in several different languages, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, others. They move from punk to ska to reggae to Spanish ballads to other African and European sounds, shifting from song to song in a somewhat formulaic manner (my only small criticism). Good reggae, that's all I need. The band is very tight and handles hairpin turns with a lot of bounce. The show was sold out to a very Euro crowd - very sexy - something about that Latin rhythm brings out the slow hip grinders. The ska/punk brings out the bouncy bouncy hovercraft full of eels, gets you arrested or molested. Everyone was dressed nicely and had a great time. They had to close the streets when it was over because people literally danced out and milled about for hours. I found a $20 bill on the floor. I'm definitely adding Manu Chao to the list of acts to see whenever they come to town. Speaking of Euro crowds... - The Queen - 06-05-2007 ... what is with the Euro idea of man-fashion? We were having breakfast at the Pantry and saw three Euro guys having trouble with the local currency dressed in capris pants, track shoes and carrying man purses. What's with that?! You sure they were Euro? - Drunk Monk - 06-06-2007 They may have just been queer. Didn't see anything like that at Manu Chao. Of course, Dm wasn't so focused on the guys. One Euro guy comes nosing into Rock Med DM: Can I help you? Euro Guy (not understanding, thick accent): Non. I am French. |
