A Sort of Homecoming (2023) - Greg - 03-20-2023

Bono and The Edge are interviewed by David Letterman and perform some of their stripped down songs at the Ambassador Theater.

If I ever wanted to be David Letterman this was the time. He gets to walk around Dublin, hang out with Bono and The Edge and watch them perform in front of a crowd of a couple hundred people at most. He also goes to a Trad session with them at a local pub. I don't think Dave ever looked happier. I know I would have been over the moon to be in that small pub singing tunes.

I've been less than impressed by the new collection of songs that were old songs. I happened to like the old songs and the way they were done and the new versions don't do a lot for me. But the way they were performed in this documentary might sway me. The cello addition was particularly welcome. I'm still not sold but this was good.

I did find out a few new things about the band which is always good. Dave did some funny bits especially going to a beach called Forty Foot which leads to one of the funniest and most sentimental parts of the documentary. Glen Hansard, an Irish musician who scored the musical Once, pops up. They interview a local historian. But mostly it's Dave and Bono and The Edge.

If you like U2, I recommend this. If you like long form Letterman interviews, I also recommend this.

I started to watch this but my new AppleTV dominated and kept taking over the screen. I still watch D+ off my Chromebook and haven't uploaded the app for my AppleTV (not my D+ account). It was amusing as far as I got and I plan to finish it later.

I'm sure I don't understand what that means.

I have two inputs jacked into my tv - my appletv and my Chromebook. My tv is an old Westinghouse so when I set th input channel, sometimes it flips over to another channel. It's annoying and was a minor issue with my old appletv. It's a major issue with my new appletv. I'll be watching this on my Chromebook and it'll randomly switch channels over to my appletv input. It used to only happen once after I switched inputs. Now it happens constantly with the new appletv if I'm watching something on my Chromebook.

apple is so demanding.

It wants all and must not be denied.

I have all my streaming apps on my AppleTV. I did this when the smart portion of my smart tv decided not to be smart.

All hail!

That was great. I see what you mean about being jelly of Dave and that cellist was on point. Imagine having to back the Edge acoustic on cello.

I rather enjoyed the new versions and songs. Mostly I enjoyed hearing them stripped down acoustic. That's when you can really hear the skill - it doesn't get more honest.

I hope they release a concert film that's just the performances in this without the narration (the random shots of Dublin can stay). I should give the new stuff a serious listen.

I'd like to find the spot where I heard (maybe?) that Rick Rubin once told U2 that they needed to make their songs singable not just these tightly produced songs for the record.

This reminds me that "A Sort of Homecoming" is one of my favorites of their songs. In some ways I think The Unforgettable Fire is their masterpiece.

Currently, All I want is you is my favorite.

The historian that was part of the doc turns out to be a podcaster I listen. His name is Donal Fallon and he does a podcast called Three Castles Burning about the social history of Dublin. I made the connection when I listened to the podcast he made about being on the show with David Letterman and talked about his involvement. Mr. Fallon doesn't own a TV and hadn't heard of Letterman. His two main contributions were taking the film crew to the Ha'penny Bridge and bringing up the Clash at Trinity College.
