The Dragon Lives Again - El Dingo - 04-01-2007

Bruce Lee wakes up in the underworld. He realizes the weapon between his legs was stolen and demands its return from the king of the underworld. Then he goes too a noodle house to chew, suck and spit out the special of the day. Then Popeye and Kwai Chang Caine eat dinner. Then Zatoichi throws chopsticks at him. The he fights James Bond and Clint Eastwood (dressed as 'The Man With No Name'). The One-Armed Swordsman helps him.

Then he goes to a club to meet Michael Corleone and Emmanuelle. Then the Exorcist plots against him and Emmanuelle seduces him. Then he fights a whole bunch of Mummenschantz guys until Popeye eats spinach essence and if I remember correctly the world asplodes.

There was something about a Chinese Demon but PPFY brought tequila and I blacked out.

Mysterious actor portraying Bruce Lee - cranefly - 04-02-2007

Midway through the movie, El Dingo voiced his puzzlement over the guy playing Bruce Lee, who didn't look like him and didn't show any great martial ability.

I suggested it might have had something to do with availability.
Still, it was a very good question, and I got to puzzling over it.
I had noticed that later in the flick he did some decent kicks, so I suspected he did have a good martial pedigree, but the director didn't want to invest time and expense in a decent fight choreographer.

So I did some research, and this is what I found. By the way, I suspect DM might already know this stuff, because this is the kind of stuff he knows. But I'm not sure.

The actor who played Bruce Lee is named Siu-Lung Leung.
He is sometimes credited as Bruce Leong / Bruce Leung / Siu Lung Leung / Bruce Liang / Hsiao Liang / Siu Lung Liang / Bruce Leung Siu Lung.
Yes, that's a mouthful.
He was extremely active in early martial arts films, but then disappeared for 20 years before coming back in this role:

That's right. He played the Beast in Kung Fu Hustle. Stephen Chow has resurrected a number of past notables in his films, and Bruce Liang (as I'll call him) was one of them.

Anyway, here's Bruce Liang's bio, which I find rather fascinating for all the things he's done.

Siu-Lung is Cantonese for 'little dragon' - Drunk Monk - 04-02-2007

Bruce Lee was known in Cantonese as Lee Siu-lung. He was also known as Lee Sam-toy (three-legs, which explains that one scene against Zatoichi, not but not the numbchuk erection scene).

In retrospect, I think that the best characterization was by Popeye. Put Robin Williams to shame. Eric Tsang - wow. He was in some old Jet movies. I still think that one guy was Sam Seed from the old Jackie movies.

And I still think this film needs to be remade with DM as the King of the Underworld...

Rare 100% agreement - cranefly - 04-04-2007

DM is right. This movie begs to be remade. The concept is so good.
And DM is right again. He would make the perfect King of the Underworld.

I get to be Emmanuelle.

Are you still waiting for him to soothe that itch? Inquiring minds want to know.
