The Host - cranefly - 03-15-2007 Yes, I did see this movie. And so did Lady Cranefly. Please don't keel over from the shock. Let the movie do that for you. This Korean horror movie works in mysterious ways. There is a monster, of course, and it's about time the lowly catfish got some respect. But there's side elements that get pretty whacky. Talk about a dysfunctional family. There's perhaps one person meant to be the protagonist, but this is mostly an ensemble performance, where the family -- already a shambles -- gets torn apart by the monster, then must put itself back together to deal with the monster. I will fault the movie for having a couple slow scenes. But some scenes are slow to do character building in uncommon ways -- and they're great. I got to laughing in several spots just at the absurdity of events -- and yes, some scenes ring true just by having people flub whatever they're intending to do. At least that's my best reality check day to day. Roper of "At the Movies" gave it a thumbs up, though he said one had to forgive its anti-American propoganda. Well, I kept waiting for it to appear, but all the depictions of Americans struck me as pretty much on the mark -- though maybe not quite ruthless and unscientific enough. You could do worse than see this movie. --cranefly P.S. Oh, Lady Cranefly thought it was a great movie. I finally saw this - Drunk Monk - 09-06-2013 I know, I know, I've seen a lot of K-flicks and somehow this got by me until now. It's been in my queue forever. I agree with CF. It's very enjoyable. K-flicks have this great eye for dysfunctional relationships, which I attribute to the S. Korea/N. Korea situation. They also have a great eye for weird architecture. It was predicable on many levels, especially with the archer girl, but surprising on others, like the ultimate victims of the monster. It did slow down at points, and could have used a Weinstein edit. A sword fight would have really helped too. |
