Severence - thatguy - 02-17-2022

Watched eps 1-2 tonight. World building. Mark is an employee at a company where he's undergone a "severance" procedure to keep his work memories separate from his non-work memories. The work is secret, so this protects the company. He has a couple of co-workers who have also been severed, one played by John Turturo. In the first ep, a new employee joins the team. In the second, more and more is revealed about his motivation to have the procedure. Christopher Walken makes an appearance.

It's very quirky/absurd, like Being John Malkovich, or Black Mirror. The set is sparse and adorned with kitschy, old tech, like CRTs and clunky keyboards. Long twisty corridors, and ominous boss, played by Patricia Arquette.

I didn't realize, maybe forgot that it's directed by Ben Stiller. It's very slow and moody. We'll see where it goes.

I've been forgetting to update this I think we're up to episode 8. I'm enjoying it. It's dark. It's weird. Walken on Turturo action. I don't want to give details because I don't want to ruin it for anyone that is going to watch it.

I saw a late night interview with Adam Scott, the lead. Apparently, he grew up in Santa Cruz.

Saw the first episode. Long on mood, moves slowly. Might get back to it, might not.

Season finale...good episode. Big reveals, lots of tension, but...goddamn cliffhanger!?!

I read later a Ben stiller quote that they always thought of this as a multi-season story. Crap...

Waiting for season 2

Season 2 trailer

RE: Severence - thatguy - 03-20-2025

Just finished Season 2…

If you like the tone and the world they’ve built, the arc of Season 2 is good and the finale is great. One of the episodes is directed by the cinematographer, Jessica Lee Gagné, and it’s beautifully put together.

Weird, quirky, dark, like Twin Peaks. Bravo!

Apparently, according to Ben Stiller, the writers are already working on Season 3, though the story could stop here and still be effective.
