Might be time to put up the DSaMoM moratorium.

SPOILER ALERT

Ah y’all know me. I’m not Scapino. I don’t spoil. I prefer writing cryptically so those who’ve seen it go ‘oh yeah’ and those who haven’t go ‘wtf?’ But honestly now, most of you go ‘wtf?’ at most things I post (although CF’s post leave me in the wtf dust).

This film is very Raimi. Almost painfully Raimi. So many cinematic homages and even some evil dead.

It’s as much about Wanda as it is about Strange. The effects are off the hook. If you don’t follow the MCU, a lot of this is just noise. One of my goddesses has a cameo and I didn’t know who tf it was because I never read the comics (fortunately Plugo explained).

It’s a fun romp, some delightfully surreal bits and lots of tentacles and eyeballs. There are swords. There are funny bits, self referential bits, Easter eggs galore, lots of explosions and magic, absurd bits that you just accept because it’s a comic book movie after all, action bits, and lots of flying about. Enjoyably distracting, which was just the right medicine for me now.

This would make a great double feature with EEAAO, and I do think that is the better film, but DSatMoM was a bombastic ride too. It’s no slouch in MCU phase 4 or 5 or wherever tf we are.

The Benedicts are both great - Cumberbatch is particularly good because he has to play the same character in different universes. Elizabeth is the real star tho. I’ve never understood the Scarlet Witch but she’s great here.

D00M recommended.

END SPOILER ALERT

Not reading it until Sunday.

RE: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - Drunk Monk - 05-05-2022

There's really not that much to spoil beyond the ... well, there is one pivotal universe with lots of reveals. And the first end-of-credits scene which teases where this goes next and with who. But the rest moves along at a steady pace into fresh territory for the MCU, or should we say now the MCMU?

I think it's important to see Wandavision and What If? first, along with Dr. Strange 1 of course.

I anticipate that you'll be entertained Greg. I certainly was but my perspective is skewed towards anything that takes me out of my current state of mind for a moment of distracting relief. This gave me a good two hours worth of escape, which is really all I ask of the MCU.

RE: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - Greg - 05-05-2022

That's why I like the MCU. They have a consistent level of quality. (Except for Moon Knight. We don't talk about Moon Knight)

Plus, I am easily entertained with hardly a critical bone in my body.

RE: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - Drunk Monk - 05-05-2022

I gotta hand it to Feige. It's a comic nerd dream the way the MCU doles out those Easter eggs and weaves a huge arc from all these smaller story arcs. The devil is in the details, which is why it's extra fun to go with Plugo, who being a king comic nerd, knows those details and is more than happy to share about them - it empowers his nerdom and amuses me greatly.

Honestly, the only spoiler I really have here is obvs - this is Raimi at the reins and he is full on with that Raimi style of filmmaking. I had forgotten he directed this and when I saw his name in the credits, it all made sense.

I conceived of a Den pitch about Asian mystic temples in cinema now - Strange has Kamar-Taj, Shang-Chi has Talo, and Fantastic Beasts has one too now. Doubt I'll get to it though because my thinking isn't clear right now.

RE: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - Greg - 05-05-2022

Not Asian, but Moon Knight has quite the temple set up as well.

RE: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - Greg - 05-05-2022

Stupidest tie-in ever continues....

RE: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - Drunk Monk - 05-05-2022

It's actually quite relevant to the movie*

As for that Den pitch, which probably won't happen, I was going to focus on Asian temples and broker my Shaolin/Wudang experiences into it. I'm still ruminating over it but I don't have the bandwidth right now.

*no. no it doesn't. it's completely irrelevant.

If I haven't told you, just know, that I've never liked you.
