Duo Gordis Hantai at Stanford - King Bob - 11-07-2021 Went Friday night to a free show at Stanford. Viola da gamba and harpsichord duo playing music of Marais, Couperin and Bach. The artists are big names in early music in France, and top notch players. With those multi-part sonatas, some of the movements are better than others. One movement in the Marais piece was stunning. In the French pieces, the harpsichord was mainly accompanying, but in the Bach it was an equal voice, which made me think that the Baroque is really the end of the polyphonic composition methods of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. I'm going to keep an eye on the Stanford music department calendar next year. Almost all the shows are free. |
