The Way of the Househusband - Drunk Monk - 04-09-2021
This one really got me. I laughed out loud for real a few times. It has a hysterical parody style, both of the Yakuza tropes and anime. The ending cat bit in ep 2 got me laughing too hard. After the middling mediocrity of Made in Chinatown yesterday, this show really hit home on several levels.
5 eps each only around 20 mins. I was only going to watch one but binged them all.
No sword fight but lots of knife work, especially tanto. DOOM recommended.

Cool. I just saw this one, so I'll add it to the list. Right now I'm rewatching the original "The Killer Elite". What a lovely glimpse of 70's SF.

The first two eps were strongest because of the end neko chapters. I wish that ran through the whole show. The cat plays a background role throughout but there aren’t stand alone chapters. The second one made me laugh the hardest because it was just so odd. There is a progression to the story and their all short so it’s worth seeing it through.
What platform is Killer Elite on? I’ve been meaning to revisit that.

So there’s a live action version of this on Netflix now. I just watched the first 3 eps. It’s not as good. The eps are only like 6 min long and there’s only like 5 of them but I bailed. It’s just an actor playing that character giving household maintenance advice - how to sharpen a knife (that’s the first one and it’s helpful if you’ve never used a whetstone), how to do laundry, how to use a candle to lube a sliding door. It’s decent advice I suppose but that’s it.
The cat appears. It does nothing but fill scenes. I was so disappointed.
No sword fights or tanto fights. Just chopping cabbage. Not DOOM recommended.

And we’re back with new anime eps.
Watched the first new one - e6 I think (or 30-something in the smaller bites). There were several of the mini eps - the fair one was the best. The animation seems more static but the protag’s voice just nails it.
I’m going to watch these slowly, one Ep every once in a while, to make it last.

E8 was middling. Expected more after the previous one which struck all the right notes for me personally. It was a Halloween Ep, so timely. A lot of demon eyes tho. I luv how this parodies anime style. I should’ve kept to my one Ep per night max plan.

I could cosplay Tatsu easily. I'd just need an apron with a shibainu logo and some facial scar makeup. I've got the rest. Except for the tattoos, but that would be overkill. Who'd see that?

2nd season was as good as the first (actually Ep 60 since they’re short). Totally gonna cosplay Tatsue someday. Just need that apron. Need it anyway. Haven’t had a decent apron since my AFS daze...

I started watching this again from the beginning (until I was rudely interrupted http://brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=693&pid=57912#pid57912). It’s still good fun and I’m still convinced I could pull together an easy cosplay of Tatsu. I’d just need to make the apron and trim my facial hair down, plus add the scar. I have a jacket and sunglasses akin to his already. But I won’t get it together for SDCC. Maybe SiliCon if I go. That’s at the end of August in San Jo. We’ll see…

I got an apron at Daiso for $3. By coincidence, I just watched the ep where Tatsu is a substitute teacher and assigns the class to make their own apron designs.

S2e1: At first, I thought the initial bit was a repeat. But this won me over again when Tatsu is tasked to dog sit a cute Shiba Inu. And there was a concluding neko bit at the end (but it wasn’t very good). Nevertheless happy to have another season to enjoy.

E2 another cat cafe theme - turns out Tatsu works part time at the cat cafe and the lady crime boss comes in for her cat fix. Another segment was about getting croquettes in a typhoon. There was also one about Mike buying a pile of snack foods to get points towards some Policure prizes (her fav anime) and then they all try to eat it all because they don’t have room in their fridge but they get stuffed so Tatsu dresses up the snack foods to make them more appealing - kind of a recipes ep. Not a great ep but the cat cafe and typhoon were perfectly timed for what’s happening irl here.

So the reason I thought s2e1 was a repeat was that it was actually s1e10 and if I’d just bothered to read my review (or better yet, just remembered what I saw over a year ago) I’d have known. So merc-in-retro.
The real S2e2 begins with a two-parted as Tatsu tries to join a women’s association and is tested by an ikebana master. The martial training was ok - could’ve gone deeper. Then Tatsu and Miku do some policure cosplay which I’ve kinda been waiting for, I just didn’t know it. Then a haiku slam, which made me think of our haiku thread. Tatsu had some funny yakuza haiku.
