New Christmas Carol (so-called) on FX - King Bob - 12-21-2019 This was done by the guy who did Peaky Blinders, which I've never seen. It had the gritty Victorian look down cold. Guy Pearce is Scrooge and is pretty good; if they had respected the source material he could have been really good. Unfortunately it's only really loosely based on the book, and had virtually none of the good dialogue from it. A lot of backstory about how Scrooge and Marley were the original corporate raiders and lots of death resulted. Bob Cratchit was not meek and kind, but kind of surly and backtalking which made him unlikeable to me. Mrs. Cratchit was black, but Tiny Tim was white, although his older sisters weren't. The spririts were nothing like Dickens' and at times even took the form of people Scrooge knew. The Christmas Past part was very long (with Andy Serkis as a ghost who looked like Leon Russell) but was almost only concerned with the tragedies caused by Scrooge's investments, aside from a brief episode of him at school - where his sister pulls a gun on the headmaster! - and no Fezziwig. The Christmas Present part was very short, with no Fred's house, but a newly invented Tiny Tim tragedy, and since the Ghost was changed, there was no robe and no children under it. Future also very short, and the Ghost was clearly a man, without a shroud, and that kind of wrecked it. There was also really no Christmas to this at all except for the setting; all the Christian content of the original was gone. It could have been good, but it was crap. RE: New Christmas Carol (so-called) on FX - Drunk Monk - 12-21-2019 did it have want and ignorance? that's my fav part. RE: New Christmas Carol (so-called) on FX - King Bob - 12-21-2019 No. (Perhaps you missed my mention of that since I didn't name them.) The whole thing was wasted potential. They obviously spent plenty of money, so they could have done it up right. I was very disappointed. Muppet Christmas Carol is way better. RE: New Christmas Carol (so-called) on FX - Drunk Monk - 12-21-2019 Ah, I see that now. I read that before my morning caffeine so my pupils weren’t quite focusing. W & I are so creepy when done right but most versions moot them. |
