Les diners de Gala by Salvador Dali - Drunk Monk - 03-19-2019 This is Dali's cookbook. srsly. My daughter got it for me for my birthday. It's a gorgeous Taschen edition, gold foil cover sleeve, fully illustrated of course, mostly his work on Pantagruel, but several pieces I've never seen before. Man, when will I ever get to the end of this guy's work? Dali was famous for extravagant parties and this is the food. He aspired to be a cook in his early years. Some of the recipes are contributed from chefs from Maxim's and other noted gourmet places Dali loved. Most of them are developed by an anonymous source, one that sounds a lot like Dali himself. Yes, I read all the recipes. It helped me digest the accompanying artwork. And I'm no cook, so most of it made little sense. They were intense recipes - many take several days to prepare. There's a single chapter devoted to snails and frogs. Lots of pates, foie gras, caviar, sweetmeats, and the arrangements were critical. There's photos of many of the finished dishes, with a penchant for leaving the heads on the meats. The food is rich, fatty, buttery, liquory and spicy. I can't really eat any of them because they almost all have copious amounts of meat or sugar. There's one that I considered trying for liquoured prunes, but it takes two and a half months to prepare. Once again, I'm in awe of the master. Dali is my muse. |
