TC Media Studio closing - Drunk Monk - 02-17-2019 Earlier this week, I posted this: http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=6&pid=31793#pid31793 So here's what's happening. Tiger Claw is closing the TC Media studio, including our video room, our green room, and our 'war' room where my desk has been for 20 years. We're renting out the space to our neighboring company, along with two of our trucking bays and some of the warehouse. My department is moving to the Tiger Claw side, where we will share a much smaller office (two offices are being combined to house us) and a much smaller studio (the conference room and a small office are being joined to form that). The new tenant moves in April 1st, so construction starts next week, and we move over March. We were totally blindsided by this. We knew sales were down but not so much to trigger such desperate measures. Actually, this was the original plan for the building - TC Media was originally to be housed on a second story above the Tiger Claw side and what has been our space was to be sublet. But there was some issue with building that second story so it didn't happen. Now we will all cram into the already tight TC side. It's heartbreaking and devastating. For any of you who've visited our office, you know our walls are adorned with all our past issues - 27 years worth and 4 different magazines - plus calligraphy from noted masters and several autographed posters I've collected. Plus our studio is a full-size space, complete with lighting. It's such a terrible loss for us, as well as for the martial community. We held meetings and gatherings in our green room, and GM Tu came through to hold seminars there regularly. I confess that it has been a luxurious space. Gigi's office is almost never used, except for her naps and occasional interviews. The studio stays dark 70% of the time. The green room is mostly a staging area for our sales crew preparing to table at tournaments. It's hard to have this happen on my watch, but somewhat inevitable given the decline in publishing. At least we still have the print mag, and I don't have to lay anyone off yet. Ordinarily this, or what is happening with my mom right now, would be sufficient to push me over the edge. But duty calls - there's no escape. It's getting really hard to track details. I teeter between depression and bouts of rage (my elbow is still suffering tendonitis hampering my practice, which is my vent for my anger issues - my practice has suffered on so many levels). I've considered disarming, not keeping my daily carry, out of fear that I might lose it and shank someone annoying. But I used my daily carry all the time at work - so few other employees bother to carry any basic tools - plus I'll surely need it for the move. RE: TC Media Studio closing - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 02-17-2019 Fuck. RE: TC Media Studio closing - thatguy - 02-17-2019 Damn! Sorry for the bad news... --tg RE: TC Media Studio closing - Drunk Monk - 02-19-2019 The remodel for Tiger Claw starts this weekend and we are anticipating being able to start moving desks next Tuesday. By Monday, we'll have a sense of the shape of the new space. We've got a floor plan graphic (the advantage of having a graphic team). It's going to be tight. The office space is less than half of what we have now and we must add places for two other employees, our video guy and our alleged IT. Our core team, me, the two graphic guys, and our vid guy, have been together now for 19 years. This office space opened just a few months before I started here so it's about 20 years here too. The new tenants were just in looking at our space and debating how they planned to remodel it. It's our new neighbors, by the way. Blue Star - a catering and vending machine company. They took over the adjacent building. Arse, the son-in-law (Arse is an abbreviation of his actual surname) was by yesterday daughter Oh and the family. Arse was the TC graphic artist in TN, who married into the family (after an extensive pre-nup) and opened a comic book shop near De Anza. He's not well liked because of his social ineptitude. He came lurking like a vulture, eyeing obsolete video gear, and planning his TC channel. He even posted on his gram about it. Pissed me off and made me fantasize about shanking him with a slow, sadistic twist. G2 started yelling defensively today, but that's really nothing new. She does that. She's always done that. The rest of the TC crew is bearing up as best as can be. I got super pissed trying to post something, so much so that I had to punch the desk repeatedly. It's a metal frame desk so there was no damage to me or my desk. I'm going to have to let that desk go anyway. It was my secondary desk and I must cut back to just one. RE: TC Media Studio closing - King Bob - 02-20-2019 Having been forced into smaller office space twice here, I feel for you. It eats at your self-worth, even though it isn't your fault. So sorry. It was a nice space. Now you'll have to Marie Kondo all that stuff you've been hoarding. She does that sometimes, this weird avante-garde forecast thing - drives me nuts sometimes. That being said I am totally convinced that Marie Kondo is a yokai fox demoness. ![]() RE: TC Media Studio closing - El Dingo - 02-21-2019 We're sort of going through the same thing. When I started at Wind River we occupied 3 of 4 buildings on the Alameda estuary. Last year we laid off a bunch of people moved into 2 buildings. Now we are moving into 1 building. I just wanted to work these last few years into retirement. RE: TC Media Studio closing - Drunk Monk - 02-21-2019 (02-21-2019, 07:38 PM)El Dingo Wrote: We're sort of going through the same thing. I was thinking about you and your situation with this. I searched a bit for the thread you mentioned this on to follow up but couldn’t remember which it was. What’s happening with you there now? RE: TC Media Studio closing - Drunk Monk - 02-25-2019 Time to start packing. The major move is tomorrow. The new space is tight. Very tight. I may have to shank our IT guy for more leg room. He won't be missed. And I'll take pleasure in watching him cry. RE: TC Media Studio closing - Greg - 02-25-2019 Leave no trace. Leave no witnesses. RE: TC Media Studio closing - Drunk Monk - 02-25-2019 Things were going okay until Gigi decided she had to have input - it started with a simple question - do we need more outlets? The immediate answer was 'yes'. There are only two to power 5 workstations. But then she had to go on about how to redesign the room after our graphic team measured it all out - it's a tetris problem squeezing five stations, shelves and file cabinets into the small space. It's going to be really tight and not well ventilated. They weren't done when I left just prior to 3 - wanted to get Stacy over the hill before the storm hit. I really hope they are done by tomorrow morning. A lot has to happen quickly for me. I must secure my promised real estate before Gigi re-orgs it on a whim. So stressful. With the warehouse a total mess and the possible rain, getting all the furniture and stuff over will be a task. I just want to get it over with, to regain some stability, ASAP, before I lose it and shank someone. Everyone looks so shankable now to me. That's really a bad sign. I'd disarm, but I'll need my skeletool for the move. RE: TC Media Studio closing - Drunk Monk - 02-28-2019 The move went well, all things considered. Our TC Media crew pulled together nicely. It was bonding, as if we needed to bond anymore after working together for 19 years. TC is lame. They don't have good space awareness and stood in our way when we were moving large pieces of furniture. If you combine all the years of everyone on TC's floor now, all the phone operators, minus one dude, any one of our TC Media crew has more years, more than all of them combined. Due to the forum crash, the posts about our warehouse lead losing 8 members of his family to a horrific car crash in Mexico last Saturday was lost. I don't know how he keeps going. So brutal. I'm sure the photos of the bodies are haunting some of the other employees who looked. I've seen my share of that stuff, some of it live and in person, so it's not an issue. But still, I can't but feel for him. He's mi amigo. I have a large wood desk. It's press board, but I'm attached to it because it's wood, and it's L-shaped. I let go of my second metal desk. I had the contractor chop a foot off one section so it would fit. Most of my key stuff is moved, including some choice DOOM stuff like some KB paintings (not hung yet but soon), a yeti voodoo doll (the torch broke so if things seem dark, PPFY, that was an accident) and the scotty plate (beam me up, dammit!) There's still a ton of stuff on the other side - so many books and mags and some dumb knick knacks - I'll KonMarie that. I have more time for that. My new space is cozy, like a space capsule... or a sarcophagus. I should also mention that the remodel not only includes moving that chunk of the warehouse. They are also retiling the bathrooms and the kitchen/lunch room. So the entire place is a shambles. We (meaning all the warehouse, TC & TC Media) have to walk across the warehouse to our old office to piss, crap or get hot water, which is being moved about and still accepting containers (gotta keep the money flowing, especially now). Oh wait, not hot water. Our IT couldn't figure out the hot water safety button on our filter. I showed him. He didn't quite get it so he forced it. There was an audible snap and I told him 'hey, don't break it.' He said he didn't. But a little while later, the hot water spigot started dripping uncontrollably, and fortunately someone caught it before it was all flooded. Now we must get bottled water and heat it in the microwave. Which is in the warehouse. In a shambles. Because the kitchen is being retiled. I can't bitch at him too much though because he did a great job setting up my PCs. Plus he needs to fix my remote access tomorrow. After that, maybe I'll bitch at him. He rejected the idea of being in our office space, so it's just the core four of TC Media and everyone is happier for that. I took today off, not because it's my birthday, but because I had to shuttle my mom to her medical appointments. I'm glad of the break from the chaos. Back at it tomorrow. RE: TC Media Studio closing - Drunk Monk - 03-04-2019 We are slowly settling into the new space. There's still major construction going on with the kitchen and bathrooms on the TC side so everyone has to make the trek back to TC Media to drink or eliminate. I drink gallons of tea - top shelf Chinese teas mostly - so I'm walking back and forth all day. I try to pick something up and bring it over each time. It's a lot noisier on this side, but more social, which is pleasant. On the whole, the TC crew is alright. The Chinese phone operators are just getting to know me and appreciate that I drink Chinese tea. The Korean seamstresses - you know, I've worked with them for 20 years and have barely spoken a word to them. Our warehouse lead, the one who lost 8 family members, continues on a downward spiral. This morning he discovered that his truck had been pilfered after a tournament he worked last weekend. It was parked by his home in San Jose. They got the profits (not much, like $200), the registration, cleaned out his glove compartments but no damage to the truck. The hard part is that he had left his recently completed tax forms and his passport there, and they got that too. The second-in-command in our warehouse, Kevin, the brother of the Manny that joined us for Bruce Lee night so long ago, one of his good friends is about to lose his daughter to cancer. I don't know all the details - he told me a lot but I've been too self-centered on my own drama to remember. He's been collecting shoes for some sort of fundraiser for the funeral. Patrick must now leave Milo, his huge hound, at home. One of the senior employees here at TC (in the bloodline) is full-on phobic of any animal. She used to freak out at Baihu, the cross-eyed cat we had adopted for a while. Additionally, another employee has allergy issues. There's not much room for Milo anyway. So Pat's gf Lea, who is a tiny gal, took Milo on his daily constitutional this Monday morning. And he slew a faun. Milo is super mellow when he used to hang out on TC Media's side - a real sweet dog - but he's husky/wolf/monster so when he gets it in his mind to hunt, blood will spill. He has a record of catching squirrels, but this was his first deer. He's a gorgeous white dog, and Lea she he was covered in deer blood. She felt really bad about it - this was her first walkie with Milo like this. I'll be so happy when the construction is done and I don't have to walk the whole fuckin warehouse for tea refreshers and to pee. RE: TC Media Studio closing - Greg - 03-04-2019 Holy fuck. |
