Suburbicon (2017) - Drunk Monk - 01-06-2019

It's a Coen brothers movie, directed by Clooney, that feels like their take on a Hitchcock classic.  A murder takes place next door to a newly-arrived black family, and the two story arcs interplay through the two boys that are neighborhoods.  The murder plot and complications are so Hitchcock, even down to some of the shots and music that echo 50s murder films.  The racist trials of the black family are based on a true story.  It's a bit uneven as the stories don't quite mesh well - there's a statement about white privilege with the murder plot next to the innocent oppressed black family, but it gets lost in the mix.  The absurdity of the mounting murder complexities overshadow the racial injustice, and although its resolved in the end, that doesn't save the film's awkwardness.  It's very Coen bro with its dark humor and grisly karmic paybacks.  Julianne Moore is at her psycho best and even Matt Damon delivers in the end.  It was enjoyable for what it was, not an over-the-top great Coen brothers film, but not that bad of one either.  Not great, not good, just okay - so I wouldn't really recommend it unless you're a big fan of anyone involved.

It's Meh!

I would say it's just a notch above 'meh'.  A small notch, granted, but it's okay.

I read where this was originally planned as a follow-up to Blood Simple, and then was merged with the racial story recently, so it has a throwback feel on a few levels.

But yeah, the Coen bros are waning.   Undecided
