The real 2018-2019 TV Season Thread - Greg - 09-29-2018

Go ahead. Attack me. I can take it.

I started with a couple new show as well as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but that is over on the streaming thread.

This week I did FBI, Magnum PI, and the InBetween Man. I have more on the DVR but I am waiting for the Queen's return before I watch some of them like Manifest and Murphy Brown.

I feel like I'm watching all these TV Land or Channel 20 shows with all the reboots I am seeing.

Of the three I did watch, I liked InBetween Man the best. It's like a cross between Barry and The Sopranos. It does deal with a guy who beats people up for a living but he seems the crime life seems to be losing it's appeal for him. It's an Australian show over on FX on Tuesday nights. It's a half hour long show but they've been putting out double episodes. It's full of swearing including un-beeped Fucks. They promise nudity but have yet to deliver. In the four episodes I have seen, it's all been pretty gritty.

FBI

I remember watching the show as a kid, but I can't remember anything about it except for Ephram Zimbalist Jr. And maybe they did recaps of the crimes at the end with the crooks in circular mattes. Anyway, it's from Dick Wolf, he of the Law Order Franchise and the trilogy that is set in Chicago. It seems like all of his other procedurals, but that is not neccesarily a bad thing. In this episode Missy Peregrym and her partner are hunting down a bomber in the Bronx (I just got the joke) who is blowing up gang members. There are twists and turns. Jeremy Sisto yells a lot. The blonde SAC woman is menacing and speaks in a whisper. It's just your solid show.

Magnum PI

Having never watched the original, I can't see how this holds up to the original. There has been a lot of chatter about the fact there is a hispanic man in the lead role and he doesn't have the iconic mustache. Yeah, okay. He does drive the ferrari. He doesn't wear the Hawaiian shirt. And Higgins the house caretaker is a woman. She is probably the best character in the group.  Magnum is still a PI. He has a support team of war buddies around to help solve the crimes. He is at odds with law. Since this show is also done by the Hawaii 5-0 guys, they get to talk about 5-0 and there is supposed to be a cross over in the offing. This show was a lot lighter than 5-0 and there are some good laughs. But it also feels like a TV show out of the 90s. I'll watch a few more before consigning it to the dust bin.

I started watching FBI last night and was pleased to see Missy in the lead.  She won my attention in Stick It - Tara being a gymnast, was into that movie and I wound up watching it many times.  I always hoped Missy would make it into action film because she was athletic enough, but I guess I'll settle for her career in TV.  Or not.  We didn't make it through the episode.  Ol' Dick Wolf - so formulaic.

Watched Murphy Brown for the Season opener cameo, which was tight but all too short.  The timing and staging feels like such a throwback to the original show which I didn't really watch but was only marginally aware of because of the politics of it.  I've always admired Candace but I doubt I'll watch much more.

Started to watch S12 of Big Bang Theory.  Teller speaks?  WTH!?!  That kind of ruined it for me.  But I'll probably tune in once in a while.

Started The Rise of the Phoenixes - a Chinese TV show that Netflix is claiming.  It's opulent in sets and costume, an imperial court drama.  Might continue, but the lead actor, Chen Kun, is too emo, to Hamlet, and there are a lot of eps with a lot of talking, not quite enough action yet.

Can hardly wait for the Star Treks, but I heard the shorts are less than half an hour each.  One a month?  Not nearly enough.

Started Mayans MC, mostly for Sarah Bolger from Into the Badlands, who I've held in my arms and Greg took a photo. It was consensual and we weren't drunk despite an open bar.  It's a gritty border biker drama.  I'll watch a few more of those.

But the real show I'm looking forward to is next Thursday MAN AT ARMS: ART OF WAR!

The Rookie

The likable Nathan Fillion plays a forty something likable rookie cop in Los Angeles. As the Sergeant keeps pointing out, Fillion is going through a midlife crisis and this was how he was combating it.

As one reviewer pointed out, it should really be called the Rookies because they follow Fillion and two other rookie cops as they learn the ropes of their new job.

The show is quite entertaining. Fillion plays earnest rather than goofy. There are a bunch of complications right in the first episode. It moved along at a good clip. There was some funny events. There were some good twists.

I can't wait for next week's episode. This is the only show in the new season that has caught my attention.

No Stana, no DM.

Bailed on all the shows I mentioned above except for Mayans MC & Big Bang Theory

Adding Medici (well, that's not a new show) and Planet Earth: Africa.  Watched an episode of Shakespeare Uncovered (PBS) and will definitely check out more.

But Nathan is dreamy!

RE: The real 2018-2019 TV Season Thread - Drunk Monk - 10-21-2018

Castle was all about Stana for me. And Firefly, which I didn’t watch that much of, Morena. So who is dreamy Nathan’s female co-star?

I was mistaken above - it’s actually BBC Earth Africa and it came out in 2013. But it’s new to me.

RE: The real 2018-2019 TV Season Thread - Greg - 10-29-2018

Nathan has a couple of dreamy costars. The show is rife with people of color. Nathan stands out as one of the few white actors in the show. Lots of women in positions of responsibility.

I'm really liking this show. It's very soapy but it does have a lot of humor.

Alright already. I watched an ep of the Rookie. I liked the hardcore cop with the junkie ex-cop ex. The rest was rather meh for me. The scene where they arrest the dad and that his kid to CPS - I’ve done that in real life. No joke, for real. A few times even. So watching that on TV isn’t that entertaining for me.

Nathan really needs a Morena or Stana to work for me. Actually it’s all about Morena and Stana. Who needs Nathan?

I’m kinda bailing on Mayans MC. Not quite holding my interest. There was some machete action earlier but that seems to have faded.

I’m 2 eps deep in The Rominovs and still engaged. Ep1 was Paris in some streets that I probably strolled. Ep2 had saberage and midgets.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

I decided to watch this for Halloween. I could have gone with the Haunting of Hill House, but I figured the Queen would enjoy that so Sabrina it is.

I figured on Sabrina because I was partial to Riverdale, but I can't find enough time for that show.

I think my catholic upbringing and fear of the devil worked against me for this show. It was a celebration of Satan with a whimsical bent to make it okay. But I was put off by the idea of a girl bathing in blood and pledging her life to Satan for her 16th birthday. They use spells to cause harm to the principal when he won't give Sabrina what she wants.

Yes, it's make believe but for me the struck the wrong chord.

RE: The real 2018-2019 TV Season Thread - Drunk Monk - 11-01-2018

I was wondering about Sabrina.  But I probably won't engage it.

Did I ever tell you about when I sold blades to Anton LaVey?  That was back in the glory daze of AFS.  Hope that doesn't strike the wrong chord too.

I'm enjoying The Romanovs.  It's an Amazon Prime mini-series - well acted and scripted - each episode is a unique story with some connection to the Romanovs.  Complex female characters but most of the men are cads.  Great casting - ep 3 had the bodacious Christina Hendricks opposite the veteran Isabelle Huppert.  It was somewhat meta because it was about a film crew making ep6 of The Romanovs.  Some of the BTS bits reminded me of filming Man at Arms.

I watched Sabrina. It was pretty good.

Okay I lied. I was hoping that struck the wrong chord. I’m still stewing over all the cool crap the Vatican has horded. That plus KB’s endorsement might just tempt me into peeked in on this bloody bath scene. Are there swords?

You know what they need to make? A show starring Stana & Morena as sword-wielding witch partners. I’d watch the hell out of that.

RE: The real 2018-2019 TV Season Thread - Greg - 11-02-2018

Hey, DM and I watched the same episode of the Rookie! I like this series. It's funny. It's got a visual style to it. It's melodrama is overwrought. It's hard to be a hottie when you are carrying all that gear.

I really love the hard ass Training Officer, too. He is such a dick.

And on an insider's note, the building they use for the exterior of the police department is actually the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power building. It's very disconcerting for Los Angelenos, considering the real police headquarters is only a couple of blocks away. They use it for filming all the time.

Let's agree to disagree here.

Okay, I couldn't find Morena in a cop uniform. And I spent a lot of time surfing the web looking...  Blush

Yeah, that's funny.  Still not that into the show though.

I'm just saying ( How strange. When I edit the posts, I see both photos. When I post the post, I only see one...)
