Mismatched Couples (1985) - Drunk Monk - 07-29-2018 This is a goofy Hong Kong rom-com at the height of campiness. What makes this special is it's Donnie Yen (the reigning HK king of Kung Fu flicks) and Yuen Woo Ping (the reigning Kung Fu choreographer in Hollywood's eyes) and Kenny Perez (a personal friend who was on our cover earlier this year). And it's breakdancing fu. Yep, breakdancing fu. The story is cheesy - there's dueling Kung Fu breakdancers, Donnie demoing how to get dressed the Kung Fu way, outrageous 'b-boy' fashion, horrible moog-driven soundtrack, a tennis match where Donnie uses a bicycle instead of a raquet, the ol' hide-someone-from-a-naive-character slapstick schtick, spiked drinks to set up a trap where a live video of someone taking a dump is shown to the disco club, astounding fashion, and a goofy final duel that got a genuine chuckle out of me. The choreography (both fight and dance) is often sped up, but there's some great stuff. They aren't dancers so they don't really have the groove, but what they lack in poppin grace, they make up for with sheer physical virtuosity. Everyone wears eye shadow (particularly becoming on ol' Kenny). YWP is a bespeckled nerd, and has a fantastic command of physical slapstick. Donnie is young and so agile. This is really a must-see for anyone who claims to be fans of Donnie or YWP. It's so bad that it's good. |
