Yes, We (Still) Can by Dan Pfeiffer - The Queen - 07-10-2018 Despite the fact that Dan is NOT a great author, I highly, highly recommend it, and I hope he keeps writing because I would be very interested to hear what more he has to say about a lot of different topics. This book was a fascinating look at what it was like for him before, during and after being the communications director for the White House from 2008-2014. Although he doesn't bore you with the nitty-gritty details (and I wish there were a few more of those, frankly), you do get a good sense of the day-to-day reality of what it takes to be a part of the big-time political world; what it takes in terms of fortitude and stamina to pull it off without it killing yourself when you genuinely care about doing your job and doing it well (and how he nearly didn't pull that off). Pfeiffer also gives some insight about Obama the person vs. Obama the president. This is a super fast read, but I read it slowly, savoring the pages both because I enjoyed it and because when I knew that when I finished it, I'm out of books until some of my pre-orders show up on iBooks (or until Greg finishes the latest Alex Vera book and gives me a turn at it). So I had about 40-something pages to go last night when we passed out, and I had the most amazing dream where I was working in the White House with Obama. It was a stress dream, where everything was going wrong, of course; the important people want to talk to me right as I've dared to fill my mouth with food and there's no way to spit it out politely, I have to keep chewing and holding up my hand as if to say, "just a second..." I had a horrible time trying to focus and concentrate on the math I was supposed to do for my expenses -- which had to get done while we were eating and nothing was adding up (my job as ASNC treasurer sneaking in), and the state dinner I was attending at the last minute meant my clothing was all wrong and I was trying not to be self-conscious about being inappropriately dressed in front of all these people... but despite the stress notes, I was having fun, and I was excited to have people listen to my arguments -- wish I could remember what I said because in the dream, it sounded great, and people were nodding... and as I was leaving to go back to my office I got a hug from Obama. And then I woke up and the world was back to abnormal. That kind of sucked. |
