Titus Andronicus 03/28/18 @ The Chapel, S.F. - El Dingo - 03-29-2018 You know you are hooked when you buy single tickets to concerts. In 2010 Titus Andronicus did a semi-conceptual folk-punk song cycle based around the American Civil War called "The Monitor". It garnered much praise and I downloaded a fully-legitimate copy from the interwebs. It was a sprawling hook-laden scream-fest about love and death and getting screwed over no matter how noble your ideals were. Good stuff. I saw them do their final two songs last year as the show conflicted with a Giants game. This time I was ready. I arrived 30 minutes early to a nearly empty venue. The opener was Rick Maguire of 'Pile' who did a fine set of tortured singer-songwriter tunes on guitar and keyboard. While I was waiting I ordered a Gin and Tonic downstairs. I later I ordered another upstairs and after he served it I asked the bartender how much more it cost to substitute 'Bombay Sapphire' gin for the well-brand 'New Amsterdam'. He looked confused andsaid to just ask for 'Bombay Sapphire' on my next visit. Five minutes later he brought a new drink to me, proudly said this one was with 'Bombay Sapphire' and told me not to worry about paying for it. Weird times. Anyway, it turns out this tour was the Titus Andronicus 'acoustic' tour. It was just the guitarist/singer and keyboardist. They were great, and had it been a weekend I would have stayed the course, but on a work night I chilled for an hour then went home. Still, the free drink was unusual enough to make ithe BART trip worth it. |
