Hacksaw Ridge (2016) - Greg - 03-04-2017 Yep, it's Mel Gibson mea culpa film. It follows every beat you think it follows. Every beat. I'm having a problem with authenticity in my films these days. Films that are supposed to be real or at least have verisimilitude don't seem to pull it off. I keep shouting 'ACTING' at the TV. Because there is so much DRAMA! It also has some preachy bits and there is a lot religious iconography which I guess is to expected knowing the director. The war scene were non-stop ultra-vi. Maybe a bit too much and maybe done better by Spielberg. There was a lot of it. And there was one scene near the end when you will be just aghast at what they ask of Desmond Dos. I recommend fast forwarding to the fighting bits. Skip the boot camp stuff and the home town stuff. Or maybe watch the first half of Full Metal Jacket for the going through basic training and then watch the fighting bits in Hacksaw Ridge. Lots of explosions. A little seppuku. And plenty of flame throwers. |
