The Handmaiden (2016) by Chan-wook Park - cranefly - 02-24-2017

From the director of Old Boy (which I loved), and very much a change of pace for him.
Actually, I recently watched Stoker by him and found it a bit tedious (with Nicole Kidman a secondary character doing the Stepford Wife routine).

But The Handmaiden is a pleasant surprise.  Erotic, cerebral, lots of twists and turns.  Sumptuous cinematography, set in the time when Japan had annexed Korea.  Lots of intrigue in a cultures-in-conflict setting.

No swordfights.  No Nicole Kidman being robotically prim and proper.  No hammer fight.  No Bollywood dance number.  But this totally won me over.  Best watched without reading too much about it.

Caution: Could be elation-inducing.

IN future, can we not release a film called the Handmaiden and The Handmade's tale within weeks of each other? My brain is small.

Cool - Drunk Monk - 02-24-2017

Been thinking I should check this out, but I'm way behind on my Park and have yet to see Stoker (I do like Nicole in that sort of role - ever see Dogville?)

Greg:
Handmade's Tale was 1990 plus the new series that just dropped on Hulu.  The Handmaiden was last year.

Just to throw a monkey wrench into all of this... - cranefly - 02-24-2017

...and The Handjob (2017) is scheduled to stream on Elation Couch Cinema (subsidiary of Netflix) starting March 15.

Start popping that popcorn, that's all I can say...

Did you have to use the word 'Stream' for The Handjob?

stream on! - Drunk Monk - 02-24-2017

Popcorn did you say?  That's great for mastication to relieve prolonged elation.

Um.  So I'm told...

Cf nailed it. Agreed on all points. Especially the massive elation inducing. Got some serious elation going on here. Ring those elation bells.

This is very Park. It’s a tale told in three chapters and it’s almost Rashomon style with the second chapter retelling the first from an entirely different perspective. Tightly constructed and beautifully realized cinematographically, this gets really perverse and twisty in chapter 2, and 3’s twists were more predictable yet solid, and satisfying regarding the ultimate fates of the characters. Park seduces us with chapter 1 which is full of sumptuous sets, landscapes, costumes and plot development, then he drops his signature hammer in chapter 2. Engaging, engrossing and elation inducing. Heck, what am I gonna do with this big elation now?

Plus tentacles!

D00M recommended. Nsfw tho... too elating.

Dammit.  My elation chatter has become shrouded in the fog of time.  What the hell was I about with that anyway?

Must I watch it again?

But I've got new mountains to climb!

And new abysses to fall into...

Ruh-roh...

Elational dysfunction?

I watched this ages ago and thought I had reviewed it. I agree with the above. Recommended…

Everyone should share in the elation.

No really. This is a good watch for many reasons.
