City of Tiny Lights by Patrick Neate - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-24-2006 Do you like your private eyes based in London of a Ugandan-Pakistani descent? Then Tommy Akhtar is the gumshoe. He smokes like a fiend. He drinks like fish. He spends most of the book recovering from a hangover or starting on one. Altogether, the story is medium. It's the setting and the tone that sets it apart. It's a side of London you don't usually get. If you don't like cricket and can't pick up on the sland, it's going to be a rough ride. But Tommy Akhtar has a lot to say most of it built around cricket metaphors handed down from his father. I give you the opening line: Tommy Akhtar Wrote:I have sometimes wondered how it might have been if I hadn't opened my door that morning; hadn't said "All right, Trouble? Good to see you with your jabbing fingers, swinging fists and no insurance, household or medical." |
