China Cats - Drunk Monk - 01-01-2017 China Cats @ Don Quixote 12/31/16 Thought about Kascade @ BGC or Dead DJ @ 'mo but it felt like too long a trek to SF. Got shut out of Don Carlos @ Moes but wasn't feeling it anyway. Ended up the DD for a deadhead friend (was an honor and a privilege to DD for him) joined by another deadhead dyenosaur friend and another who just moved in walking distance of DQ and was 9 when Jerry died. We tried to explain the Phil zone and he nodded as if that made any sense at all. My 1st time at DQ. ''Twas nice & intimate. Dancing w/a lot of grey hairs. But there was a decent dead nye flashback as CC captures some of the jam. They need a 2nd drummer. There were traditional oils (bit out of practice) and the place was jumping. Deadheads singing at the top of their lungs. Young deadhead who couldn't've seen Jerry as a teen - too young - grinning and hopping lysergically who failed to mask his mildew odor with a patchouli overdose. Ah deadhead flashbacks. Such times were those. RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 12-31-2022 China Cats @ Vets Hall 12/31/22 It’s odd being here where we do yoga. I suppose I could just stay here tonight and go directly to class but I wouldn’t have my new Xmas yoga mat. I’m helping out with the staff food provider and wharf rat table (although I’m not a wharf rat by any means.) RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 12-31-2022 Rain Good times roll Hey pocky way Lotta old Cruzian deadheads here but it’s pretty empty. TN Jed Me & my uncle Almost no masks at all. Lotta hugging. The band sounds good. Hugh energy. Lotta dancing Pride of cucamunga China cats has a good sound but they’re only a 5 piece. They really need a second drummmer to get there. Queen Jane Ramble on rose RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 12-31-2022 Let it grow The deadhead zone is so friendly. My cheeks don’t work this hard smiling so much. It’s fascinating to see the post Jerry permutations. I really have not engaged the Cruzian dead scene that much. It’s been more about the reggae scene for me until Covid shut that down. My reggae family is constantly reaching out but most of the shows are indoors and I’m trying to be cautious. It’s pretty loose here. I can dance my way up to stage easily (only got elbowed by one spinning chick). Set break My partner in crime, the unseen one, bailed again. I don’t know why I bother anymore with him. forgot to mention that a cute young barista from verve brought over two shopping bags of pastries & baked goods. She was going to give them to Food not Bombs but they closed their table early due to rain. So we got them and they’ve been great for donation generation. RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 12-31-2022 China > rider Estimated > foolish heart They definitely have a goodly piece of China > rider. Might say it’s their hat trick. Matt Heartle who I chatted with earlier can get to the Jerry soar but can’t do the trippy noodles - but still, tis nuf. > eyes That was tricky squeezing that foolishness in between the estimated > eyes. Not stellar but clever. Well played. Set 2 is fire Mr Charlie There’s a lot of spinners here ranging from mountainscroat old dudes to Sylvan fairie chicks. I have a confession to make. Stacy made this dal soup and I ate a saucepan full for lunch. It’s given me the winds. Not noxious but frequent long and loud. But here at a concert, I can fart standing right next to someone I’m having a conversation with and they won’t know the wiser. It’s making my night. Fire on the mountain. Called it Lazy river road A cooling off tune… RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 01-01-2023 Balloon drop Midnight moonlight Big river I’m engaged in a texting bout with some Shaolin Rasta. One seems to be at the Miley Dolly show. The others must be at home. The other one out is a major deadhead so I think I’m winning. The other is Master Grace. She texted me a Happy New Year and we’ve been catching up a bit as we haven’t talked. She’ll be at TCEC. We just dealt with an IPR - he had a good circle and they took him home. We just observed. To lay me down RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 01-01-2023 Errr. I lost track in the end. E: sugar mag Got home swiftly & safely, and Stacy & Yuki were up. Yuki got spooked by fireworks. So I start 2023 talking down my dog. He’s panicked and wants to look in every room, particularly every door. We do that, I give him some of the high value treats and he wants to hang in the back where we watch tv. I put on one of those dog calming YouTube videos, kept talking to him and petting him, and he was fast asleep. Man, if only we had something like that for trippers. Happy New Year! RE: China Cats - Greg - 01-01-2023 DM SBD Master Grace for the win! RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 01-01-2023 Quite the opposite - LBO (loud but odorless). It was good to hear from Grace. We've exchanged some emails/messages over the pandemic. She often reaches out for holidays. RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 10-29-2023 Well, that was fun. Stacy enjoyed the first set but bailed at break. She had a long work day and it was too loud for her even with earplugs. She enjoyed what she heard though and gets their musicianship. She had a nice random chat with some deadhead who was touting Skulls & Roses, which is a 4 day festival around 4/20 in Ventura. At set break, I drove her home and even had time for some mask repairs. I got back and was thrust into the costume contest but didn’t win anything (the winner was good - a full size skeleton riding piggy back on top of him with a horse head - I conceded and we joked about it later). Set 2 was fire - almost one long jam. The dance scene with China Cats is wild, Cruzian deadheads letting loose with unabashed glee. My accomplice Sarah had commented on deadhead dancing at Moana Sol and that really stuck with me. It’s hard to explain. But for fleeting moments, surrounded by aging deadheads deep in their trance dances, I get these tiny flashbacks of that hood old Grateful Dead scene where I had so many psychotropic adventures. And it brings me joy coupled with sweet melancholy. My skull mask may have seen its last run. I built it over 30 years ago using a skull model, a basic mask, and a lot of air hardening plastic. I gave it so many coats of glow in the dark paint that it’s super bright. It’s seen so many dead shows, exotic erotics, Dia de los Muertos, and more. Tonight, tow huge cracks split the forehead and the mandible piece came askew, giving it a particularly twisted look. I suppose I could repair it, or make something new. It’s been years since I’ve made a mask. I’ve always enjoyed mask making but I’m not nearly as crafty as I once was. My skull mask had a good run. Set list: Bucket Sugaree Little light Wang dang doodle Jed Beat it on down the line ? Crazy fingers Mason Scarlet > fire Victim That’s it > terrapin > fantasy > gdtrfb e: Roads > Quinn There’s another Vets Hall show in the beginning of December. Tix are only $25 which isn’t much more than a movie nowadays. RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 11-01-2024 A Halloween show at Vets hall. Stacy didn’t want to go. I couldn’t miss it. I bought a cheap skull mask replacement at Walgreens and added a glitter tear out of some leftover stickers from Worlds Away. I went alone but knew I’d make friends. It was a wild costumed dance party. Haven’t danced like that since… well since Worlds Away. Ended up dancing with a bunch of other skeletons. We were a clique. My mask limited my vision so I bumped into a lot of people. Got a lot of compliments and slight jump scares when people got surprised by it. It was fairly comfortable but I couldn’t eat or drink with it on. Nevertheless, it worked well and I’m thinking I might have to glow paint it someday. All the Cats had wrist sweatbands for Phil. They covered unbroken chain, but it didn’t reach the poignancy I hoped for. Nevertheless it was a night to purge through dance. A lot of squid dancing. With skeletons. I know, I know, squids are boneless. They just have that cartilaginous bit that they feed to budgies. But lemme tell ya, skeleton squid dancing rocks. I was caught between several collegiate skeleton squid shakers and it was good. Ecstatic. Purgative. Healing. I walked the length of Pacific before and afterwards. It was rocking when we got out, packed tight in the intersections. I didn’t feel the love or fun that went down in the vets hall so I was home just after eleven. RE: China Cats - Greg - 11-01-2024 Glad you got a bit of catharsis. RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 11-01-2024 I see what you did there. Well played. You’re in the groove - now go slay that interview! RE: China Cats - Drunk Monk - 11-05-2024 The thing about masquerades is that after spending a night with a clique of sexy skeleton squid-dancing deadhead chicks, there's no follow up. They vanish into the ether, just like Halloween ghosts, leaving nothing but haunted memories.
