ROCK MED - Drunk Monk - 05-19-2006

For those of you who might remember (LB is active, but KB, ED, & Greg only came out for a few shows with me - actually ED did quite a few in the day, but I digress), our director of 13 years, Raz, has quit. The circumstances of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic are dire. Our founder, Dr. David Smith, was locked out of his office and is now being sued by HAFC's new CEO, John Eckstrom. SF has offered a financial band aid for HAFC, but many are skeptical that it will last past the next few month.

I've held a seat on the Advisory Board of Rock Med for over a decade. A new director has been installed, the youngest on the board, Wes. We're struggling to keep things together, but are caught in between HAFC's financial disaster and the music industry's catastrophic monopoly that is Live Nation.

Rock Med has been my muse, my practice, and my charity work for 19 years now. Our whole summer season is in flux and it's starting now. It's immensily frustrating. I'm not sure where I'll be without it in my life.

Step Up - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-20-2006

What the hell is Live Nation?

Regardless, isn't it up to you to save Rock Med? Don't let it go the way of the bookstores. You are in position to effect change, so you might as well.

Good Luck.

Live Nation is the devil - Drunk Monk - 05-21-2006

Here's their official site http://www.livenation.com/

Here's wikipedia's rundown http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Nation

Beleive me, everyone on the advisory board is working their asses off now to keep RM afloat. I've dubbed it the summer of change....

Smile and grin at the change all around me - Drunk Monk - 01-05-2011

HAFC just merged with Walden House. I alluded to this on the Furthur thread.

But what about Rock Med?!?!

I'm happy for you.

Yes, what about Rock Med? - Drunk Monk - 01-06-2011

Good question. Our director thinks we'll be grandfathered in, but there are surely questionable liability issues. We'll see.

Victoria Colliver, Chronicle Staff Writer

Two historic San Francisco nonprofit health and substance abuse organizations with roots in the '60s - Haight Ashbury Free Clinics and Walden House - have agreed to merge and combine their resources.

Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, which has been operating since 1967 and has relied on San Francisco for as much as 70 percent of its budget, saw its funding from the city drop by half since 2008 and started looking for a partner about 18 months ago.

Walden House, which started in San Francisco in 1969, is a residential and outpatient substance abuse and mental health program that also contracts with the state prison system to provide services to inmates and parolees.

The merger, which was formalized this week with a binding letter of intent, is expected to be completed during the first quarter of this year with Walden House's chief executive officer, Vitka Eisen, heading the combined organization.

"It just seemed like a perfect collaborative partnership," said Jeff Schindler, chief development officer for Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, which operates a clinic in the Haight and in the Mission District, and serves about 15,000 low-income and homeless people a year. Haight Ashbury's current CEO, John Eckstrom, is leaving the organization.

The merger of Walden House, which has an annual budget of about $58 million, and Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, which operates on about $8 million a year, creates a much stronger organization, Schindler said. "We've been around for 44 years and we're going to be around for another 44 years when other nonprofits are struggling in this economy."

New Leaf, a San Francisco center that provided mental health, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS services predominantly to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents for 35 years, closed in October after being hit with increased rent and health care costs.

Eisen, incoming CEO for the merged agency, said joining forces will allow Walden House to venture into primary care services for the first time. She said she expects Haight Ashbury Free Clinics to retain its iconic name in some form.

"We see the same population often - people with multiple challenges and complex health concerns," she said, explaining that the people who come to Walden House for substance abuse and mental health services often have other health problems that need to be addressed and Haight Ashbury patients may be referred to Walden House.

Eisen, 51, has come full circle. When she was a patient of Haight Ashbury Free Clinics in the 1980s, health care workers referred her to Walden House. As a resident, she kicked her drug problem and went on to get a doctorate from Harvard University. She was promoted last year to chief executive officer from chief operating officer.

Walden House, which has programs around the state and serves more than 2,500 individuals and families a day, has also suffered from the state budget crisis, Eisen said. She said its prison programs were cut dramatically over the past year, but remains financially stable.

The organization also hit tough times in 2003 with the suicide of its chief executive officer under threat of a state investigation over alleged financial misdoings and other problems. But Eisen remained confident about the group's continued resilience.

"We're still building the combined model, but we envision a greater ability to provide services to those in need in San Francisco," she said.

Our director, Wes, just passed away last night - Drunk Monk - 04-25-2012

He has been battling cancer for a few years now. He had it in remission and managed to show for our last Advisory Board meeting a month or so ago. But things turned sour again recently and at our Shoreline orientation, those that had seen him didn't think he would make it through the week.

The merge with Walden House has gone well. WH is an amazing organization. No one really knows how a new director will be hired under WH. It's been the elephant in the room since Wes fell ill.

I have my head too deep in KFTC20 to do much with RM for the next month.

Re: ROCK MED - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 04-25-2012

I know some one who would make a great director of Rock Med . . . .

My condolences to you about Wes.

I was tapped last time - Drunk Monk - 04-25-2012

I rejected it immediately. No director has managed to keep his marriage together unless his spouse was very active in RM. Wes's marriage broke up a few years after he took the job.

Besides, I'd hate to have to be responsible at RM.

no, i'm not applying - Drunk Monk - 06-04-2012

no fucking way. i'm annoyed enough that i'm typecast as a psych supervisor.

Apply - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 06-05-2012

What should you be typecast as?

um...good point - Drunk Monk - 06-05-2012

The kung fu villain role is getting too close to that scene where I spit blood and die, so I'm trying to morph into something else.

Did I mention the Rock Med now must wear uniforms at two venues? Izod-style shirts embroidered with the logo and EMT-style workpants. The times they are a-changin...

our new director is gordo - Drunk Monk - 06-25-2012

i knew him as a teenager. he has a rm tattoo and used to sell gravel for a living.

Of course, everything was better back in the sixties, Paul Kantner.
