The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher (2015) - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 12-29-2015 Butcher takes a break from the Harry Dresden series to take on this steam punk tale. It's quite the melange of a story. There is the naval aspect with ships that fly through the air around giant towers called Spires. Each spire is it's own nation and of course the spires are at war with each other over scant resources. There are lots of echoes of the Patrick O'Brien seafaring tales. And lots of nods to the over polite Victorian England. I think my favorite characters in the novel were the wizards who are all crazy, but they mask their insanity through different guises. A lot of the characters are stereotypes you have seen before, the cashiered ship captain, the snooty aristocrat, the naive newby, etc, but they have just enough of a twist to make them interesting. The book is whole and complete but there enough lingering questions that make you want learn more about this world and where it is going. |
