Mad Max: Fury Road - El Dingo - 05-26-2015 George Miller is still insane. "Mad Max" (and sequels), "Babe: Pig in the City", "Happy Feet" (I and II) and now the Mad Max (Reboot? Sequel?) We were disappointed in the iMax/3D "Avengers:Age of Ultron" presentation so opted to see this in 'Normal' mode. Big mistake. "Mad Max: Fury Road" is definitely filmed for 3D impact. Debris is flying at the screen non-stop. If it's not debris it's water, blood, bodies, body parts, fire, things on fire and pretty much anything that can be lifted and flung. Plot? Backstory? Bah! These are things for the weak! Before the apocalypse these things may have been important, but now it's just battle-cars, leather and velocity! The key thing that separates "Mad Max: Fury Road" from its action contemporaries is Miller's commitment to real stunts vs. CG. The cars are real, the people jumping off the cars are (usually) real, the explosions are (usually) real. He insisted that these vehicles could exist and perform in the real world. There are several websites that explore the danger these performers were in ( http://www.usatoday.com/videos/life/201 ... /27540303/ ). The story is told with a minimum of dialogue (Ka-Ching international distribution channels) and really doesn't matter. Future vague apocalypse, Smatterings of tribes and larger tribes, tyrant needs to be smacked upside the head, etc. Fill in the rest with brilliant cinematography, one giant, brief, imaginative set and cars and costumes that make you not care about the bulk of the movie being in the desert. [Possible Spoiler Alert If You Live In A Cave] | | | | | | Charlize Theron is the star of the film. Max is literally dropped into her story. And she is wonderful. A brilliant move by Miller, shut the mouths of people whining about the absence of Mel Gibson by marginalizing the Mad Max role. You aren't rooting for him, it's her mission, her quest, her redemption you care about. Finally, this movie is pure adrenalin. The character development is there, but not important beyond who-trusts-who to not shoot them in the face. The story has holes that could be filled by sequels, prequels and Bondo. I actually liked this because I built stories in my head to explain plot elements mentioned in dialogue but never explained. Only see this on a big screen with surround-sound and beating your cerebellum into an unsullied carnal experience. The Re: Mad Max: Fury Road - El Dingo - 05-27-2015 I saw it again. A coworker told me about the theater in which she saw it. It was iMax/3D but some of the seats were motion-equipped. After hours (3 seconds) of research I discovered a smattering of theaters have installed "D-Box" seats. These seats are programmed to move, vibrate and 'kick' along with the movie. The closest theater with these seats was in Martinez, and the final showing of "Mad Max: Fury Road" in iMax/D-Box was the date of this post, Wednesday, May 27th. I went to work with this knowledge gnawing at my brain. I decided I could not let this opportunity slip by and become lost in the swamp of regret. I quickly OK'd the time off with my bosses, bought a ticket and drove up for the 1:15 show. What a rush. The theater was not the full 10-story screen, 78-speaker setup but the seats were straight out of Disneyland. They vibrated, they tilted, they bucked. shook, rumbled and swerved with every scene. If a long shot zoomed in from above they glided forward. If a bomb went off they knocked you from side to side. If nothing was happening they sat silent, waiting for the next explosion. Yeah, the tickets were $20 but I got 2 hours of immersion you don't normally get from a standard movie theater. I also got to see "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 3D which became obvious as the preferred viewing of the director. Many shots were composed with 'depth of field', which does not stand out unless you're viewing in 3D. You see this in animation a lot, foreground + middle + background. The foreground is in sharp focus, then you fuzzy-up the middle and background to reproduce how our vision works. Anyway, it's used extensively in MMFR and the 3D is very effective. Miller also does some 'tunnel' shots (especially in the beginning) that translate well to 3D. In any case, I had a great time seeing this again and will go out of my way to seek out D-Box theaters for other 'explosion' films (I'm looking at you "San Andreas") D Box! - Drunk Monk - 05-28-2015 http://www.d-box.com/en/consumer/theater_find re: D-Box theaters - cranefly - 05-28-2015 Thanks for the link, DM -- and for the inspiration, ED. ED says: Quote:...will seek out D-Box theaters for other 'explosion' films (I'm looking at you "San Andreas") San Andreas? What's that one about? Re: Mad Max: Fury Road - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-29-2015 Oddly enough, Earthquake in Sensurround was just on TCM.(Senssurround not included) Boy, was that bad. Although Walter Matthau in full pimp regalia was pretty funny. I expect San Andreas to be just as bad, now and in the future. Which is where I watch all my films these days. Re: Mad Max: Fury Road - thatguy - 05-31-2015 The 9-plex in Scotts Valley is the only one around Santa Cruz that I know of that has the D-Box seats, but sadly, they've moved Mad Max into one of the other screens in favor of San Andres, so we had to suffer with a 2D screening, comfy chairs and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing Co brown ale from their cafe. The movie was fun end-to-end. It made me remember this old post from BoingBoing: http://boingboing.net/2009/11/24/bad-as ... -camp.html which apparently is now an ongoing endeavor: http://wastelandweekend.com --tg Re: Mad Max: Fury Road - El Dingo - 06-01-2015 This movie is obsessing my soul. [SPOILERS] I went online to search for some opinions on basic symbolism. I noticed that the leader of Gas Town (People Eater) dressed in a 3-piece suit and complained about profits. He had an enlarged (lead) foot and his car was a monster-Mercedes. The leader of the Bullet Farmers drives blindly into battle firing at the people he promised not to kill. Apparently, this movie has become the new "2001: A Space Odyssey" of epic dissertations. The villainous leaders are the four horsemen of the apocalypse (with Max being Death - through remorse for those he failed to save). Men are responsible for destruction because all the women in the film are givers of life. Global Warming leads to a global battle over natural resources leading to nuclear war. Technology is cloaked in religion so only a chosen few can learn its secrets. The War Boys are Islamic suicide bombers. It goes on and on. One complaint was that Immortan Joe's wives wore skimpy clothing (and chastity belts). I wanted to shout "NO ONE EVER SAW THEM BESIDES MISS KITTY". There is a close up of a pregnant woman's stomach and a dripping hose as she brings water to a thirsty Max. Giver of life? Reading too much? ARRGH! Rictus Erectus got buff through a lifelong diet of mother's milk. At the end of the movie the life-giving mothers provide life-giving water to the citadel dwellers. Anyone could have flipped the switch. Why choose the nursemaids? It's a freaking rabbit-hole of interpretation for a Mad Max movie. This movie has serious, Kubrick-level symbolism, similes and metaphors that will keep film-students talking for ages. Or George Miller made a movie that is so stupid it's forcing people to construct their own college-level theories to explain it. So bizarre for a summer action flick. you are thinking about this way too hard - Drunk Monk - 09-03-2015 'twas a fun romp. it had some very gilliam-esque moments. loved the design of it all. charlize rocked. i would have enjoyed it more on the big screen. kinda made me want to see the originals again. Saw it at home. Kind of a mistake. - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 10-28-2015 Yeah. It probably would have been better in 3-D. It's nice they still have some super-models in the wasteland, conveniently dressed in flimsy white clothing. I was feeling sad that the first chase into the desert wasn't as exciting as I hoped. But the last chase back from the desert really rocked. It saved the film from being marginal. It seemed like we had seen a lot of this before, right down to the tanker trucks racing across the desert. Maybe Miller thought that if one tanker truck was cool in The Road Warrior, three would make this film even better. More cars, more better. It was a film all about production design and car design. I still think Road Warrior was the best. All I can remember about this movie now is.... - Drunk Monk - 10-28-2015 ....this: ![]() More MAX grist - Drunk Monk - 11-13-2015 Quote:MAD MAX: FURY ROAD / 2 NOV 2015http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/11/02/ ... acy-theory Re: Mad Max: Fury Road - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 11-13-2015 Thanks for the grist. Now all we need is the mill. Ed is the mill - Drunk Monk - 11-13-2015 Maybe this will keep him up at night Re: Mad Max: Fury Road - El Dingo - 11-18-2015 Actually, after playing the video game (which explains the 'ghostly girl') I think Max is one of the kids rescued in 'Thunderdome'. He worships Max and wears the leg brace in honor (though obviously doesn't need it). He never experienced the 'old times' but heard about them from the elders before they died. That being said, go play the 'Mad Max' game. It's a hoot! RE: Mad Max: Fury Road - King Bob - 05-02-2016 Just saw this because of the free HBO weekend. Great stupid fun. Obviously there are things that are silly - Why bother to drive around when you have an impregnable citadel and you can grow crops? Why let the rabble live around it? Why the mother's milk? Why the blood transfusions? Why didn't the huge son kill the father? etc. - but I could overlook all that because I was entertained (which was not so true of Jurassic World). Funny about the Feral Kid theory - after it ended I thought that it seemed like all the other survivors of the old world were much older than Max. I thought maybe it was symbolic, like they were some of the old men who ruined the world the first time, and now doing it again, and the old women, with knowledge of nurturing - and some seeds. My wife refused to watch it. |
