Grateful Dead - Santa Clara - El Dingo - 04-11-2015

I requested 2 cheap tix for each night:

I've got multiple requests submitted - Drunk Monk - 04-12-2015

Levis is a disastrous choice for venues. They are way to corporate and rigid.

I just paid $117 in service charges... - Drunk Monk - 04-16-2015

...and more than I have ever paid for tickets. EVER.

It really is the 'steal your wallet' tour.

I got two tickets for each night. Stacy didn't get any. She was all 'you're taking me, right?' Of course! I often think that if it wasn't for Jerry, Stacy would have never married me. I think he lulled her senses and that got me in. Jerry was the ultimate wing man. Most of my deadhead friends didn't get any either. We are so grateful.

You've all seen them before, right?

Yes, my soul is dead.

Re: Grateful Dead - Santa Clara - King Bob - 04-16-2015

So is this supposed to be the last time out? (Or will they just pretend it's the last like the Who did more than once?)

Re: Grateful Dead - Santa Clara - El Dingo - 04-17-2015

Good question.

This article on Metallica reveals the expensive truth behind popular bands. They are basically corporations that require a lot of money to pay the staff: http://www.aux.tv/2015/03/metallica-is-broke/ .

I'm not sure if the Dead fall into this category, but they do employ a lot of people to maintain their websites, fan clubs, lawyers etc.

I kind of wondered why they stopped touring after Jerry died. Yes, Jerry was the iconic figurehead, but as this tour shows someone can step in and try to fill those shoes. Queen did it, Van Halen did it, Pink Floyd did it etc.

The difference with the Dead is the loyalty of the fan base. Many would say "it's not The Grateful Dead without Jerry". But something is better than nothing.

So that leaves the question, "Why stop touring as the Grateful Dead"?

Maybe there were some internal conflicts (like every other band). I believe Jerry's death was an excuse for everyone to take a breather and pursue individual projects, and years had to pass before they were ready to play together again (like Led Zeppelin).

I think they may play as The Dead again, but everyone is really old now and this may be the last time they are all healthy enough to do it.

They did keep touring after Jerry died - Drunk Monk - 04-19-2015

They toured as The Other Ones, as Furthur, and then finally as the Dead. But without Jerry, they couldn't sustain it, not at the level the the GD was at - selling out stadiums all around the country for 3-show weekends. Phil had the most success with Phil and Friends, constantly changing line-ups. Now Phil has his own place, Terrapin Xroads, where he plays regularly. I saw most all of that through, all those permutations of the Dead, and I still keep my finger in it.

Health is a huge issue. Bobby collapsed last year, and rumors flew that no one would insure him for another tour.

So, to quote the Dead quoting Dylan, 'can this really be the end?' Probably not. I can see the core four reuniting. But this is special because it's their 50th (like the Who) and because Trey is filling in for the Jerry spot.

I know several Deadheads who claim the band hasn't been the same since Pigpen died.

Whatev, man. I gotz tix. Cost me a friggin fortune. But again, I'll see it through. The Dead changed my life in so many ways.

Re: Grateful Dead - Santa Clara - King Bob - 04-20-2015

I would have to say not the same since Brent died. Vince was good but didn't get enough time with the band, and Hornsby's playing is too busy and pretty.

And related to ED's questions, I read in Long Strange Trip (which was a pretty good history to me, but I imagine DM might have more on that) that when they went to earphone monitors, everyone basically listened only to themselves and turned everyone else down. So it sounds to me like the communal feeling was pretty much gone. Maybe Jerry was the one holding it together.

And of course no other guitar player can fill Jerry's shoes; he was a genius of playing both towards and away from your expectations - sometimes even in the same phrase. I've heard some (admittedly not that much) of the post-Jerry stuff, and all the guitar playing sounded too conventional to me. But then he was a genius of the instrument, so I guess that's inevitable.

But enough of that. Have a good show!

Long Strange Trip is a good account - Drunk Monk - 04-21-2015

I know the author, Dennis McNally. He probably doesn't know me even though I personally saved his ass in a situation he got in at the 'mo. But now I just sound like another deadhead name dropper.

Jerry was definitely the leader. I can't think of Jerry and DOOM without recalling dear Greg's comment that "his jams were too long". :-D

Glad I can contribute.

absolutely! - Drunk Monk - 04-21-2015

The only funnier DOOMDead moment was when that tripper stole Scapino's hat and ran off into the crowd. Man, I'm chuckling now just thinking about that. Lol

Good times.
