Fool's Assassin by Robin Hobb (2014) - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 01-04-2015

Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb is probably one of my favorite books. She's great at world building and I really loved the world she built. It was the first in the trilogy about Fitzchivalry Farseer. The second and third books of this trilogy weren't quite up to the strength of the first book but they were still pretty good. She wrote another trilogy set in the same world but a different location called the Live Ship trilogy. It was fine but still no Assassin's Apprentice. She returned again to Fitzchivalry stories in the Tawny Man trilogy, deepening the mythology of Fitz and his friend The Royal Fool. A good read and I was glad to be back, better than LiveShip novels.

There were other trilogies and it seemed like Hobb was losing her strength of story telling. I didn't even bother to read the last book in an another series about the Live Ships. I keep thinking while reading the books that I get it already can we please stop wallowing and get to the action.

So, it took me a long time to want to even read this book. Now, I'm glad I did. It's a worthy addition to the canon. We now see an older Fitz trying to settle down with his wife Molly far from Buckkeep Castle and the intrigue of court. He continues to deal with all the mistakes he made and sacrifices he made being an assassin for the Royal Court. The book is big and moves at a slow pace, but their is kind of ominous presence over the book as you waiting for things to happen.

The story was twisty and introduces a very unexpected character in the middle who eventually shares narration with Fitz and it was nice to see the story unfolding from two separate view points.

I was very disappointed when it ended because it does end on a cliff hanger and not a happy one. I'm supposed to get the next book in August and Hobb has already indicated she has started work on the third book in the Fool and the Assassin story.

Lots of sword fights. Lots of blood. Some sexy time.

Really enjoyed Assassin's Apprentice trilogy. Will get Tawny Man next.
