New Music Works @ Downtown Santa Cruz 9/5/14 - Drunk Monk - 09-06-2014 Watermusic: Celebrations of the San Lorenzo River & John Cage's 102nd birthday. This is free music in the Cruz, sort of a post-tourist season happening downtown on a Friday. I had a comp day for working a tournament earlier this month, so S&I headed down to check it out. There was a free concert of works by John Cage and Steve Reich by the Grammy-nominated William Winant Percussion Group at Duck Island, which is just a short stroll from the Dm bungalow, then a musical procession to Abbott Square, then a dozen performances of Cage works spread across the Pacific Garden Mall (one was 'Radio Music' performed from passing automobiles - srsly, this is Cage for ya). We came in at the tale end of a Cage piece, which used a garbage can as a instrument and then caught the Reich piece at the island, and it was quite pleasant, reminiscent of Gamelan. I had a Narada moment. There were a dozen performers on stage, with a full grand piano and two marimbas. Food was provided by India Joze, and it looked really delicious, but we were still full from a late breaky at our local, Seabreeze (if any of you are ever in town for breaky, I'll take you there - well, maybe not tg as he's local and knows what I'm talking about here). The crowd was mostly grey-haired retirees and napping homeless (who else can get a Friday afternoon off?) We bailed after that so I could binge on Homeland. |
