Lorde - Drunk Monk - 09-30-2013 @ Fillmore 9/27/13 If you're not familiar with Lorde, check out Royals. It's her breakout hit. She's a 16 year old ingenue from New Zealand - no album yet - just an EP - not even any merch at the show as it was a prelude tour (she met with US press and reps throughout her trip). The show wasn't advertised but sold out in minutes. T and I managed to discover Lorde together on her commute to her old school after we moved to the Cruz. We caught Royals and thought 'woah, who was that?' It was great to visit with the 'mo crew again - haven't been up there in over two years. I was really delighted to get such a warm welcome from the old timers and very grateful that they comped my family in and even kicked down a meal ticket. I crossed paths with Lorde on the way in. She struck me as really tall, but I realized later that she had these boots with huge heels. I don't believe she is sixteen. Her voice, her look, her attitude - she's got to be in her early twenties. Maybe it's a NZ thing. Until the Ribbon Breaks opened. Three guys with synth percussion. Lame. I expect a lot more from my percussionists. I think I could have done what they did by myself (save a short trumpet interlude). And I don't play drums. S retreated to the office to read the Rolling Stone. T and I wandered the halls looking for fillmore posters for bands she knew (we only found a dozen or so). Ok, now, as you certainly realize as you've read so many of my music reviews, I am a cardholding member to the church of bass worshippers. The truth is I am a bass addict. I love big booming base. So here are three words you will almost never hear me say: too much bass. The mix was horrid, driving the bass to marrow shaking levels. When Lorde came out, you could barely hear her because of that damn bass. It was ridiculous as she's a stunning vocalist, backed only by drums and a keyboard, and it's so not about the rhythm and bass. It's about her voice. What we could her was sumptuous - she's got that lovely NZ accent and a delightfully playful stage presence. All dressed in black he reminded me a little of Siouxsie with an added wild leonine mane. She's definitely one to listen for, although I don't think she'll achieve the pop stature of Adele or anything like that. She's not quite built to be that kind of diva. But who knows? She's young. I'm looking forward to her album Pure Heroine. T is going to frame her first first 'mo poster. She's very pleased with it. Re: Lorde @ Fillmore 9/27/13 - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 09-30-2013 They've been playing 'Royals' to death on KROQ. They had her in for an interview about two months ago. You can hear the interview with Kevin and Bean as well as an acoustic performance of 'Royal' here:Lorde Interview They were streaming her new album there but it has been taken down. Pure Heroine - Drunk Monk - 10-09-2013 I bought the CD on sale at Target. I know, I know, who buys CDs anymore? I do. I'd spin vinyl if it would play in my car. I'm retro that way. Heck, I still practice with swords, so there you have it. I love the CD. It hasn't left my car player, except for T to rip it to her MP3 player. It's got a richly textured sound and Lorde's lyrical tricks continue to amuse. It is so refreshing to hear a pop starlet sing about something other than partying, sex, drugs and break-ups. I've solved the mystery of Lorde's age. She's an elf. Elf years are kind of the opposite of dog years, so when she says she's 16, that's in elf years and it means like 160 in human reckoning. She's from NZ. Isn't that where they filmed the Hobbit? Mystery solved. maybe she's not an elf... maybe dm is a 16 year old girl at - Drunk Monk - 10-10-2013 ...maybe dm is a 16 year old girl at heart. Still digging Pure Heroine. It's freaking me out how well I identify with the lyrics. Tennis Court will be the next pop track they will push. Team might make it after that. Royals played on Revenge - Drunk Monk - 10-17-2013 I love Revenge. It's the best ninja soap opera ever. And on episode three of the new season, Royals plays in the background of a posh pool party. Lorde sings 'teeth' a lot. I'm not sure why. But it sounds really good when she sings it. halloween treat... - Drunk Monk - 10-31-2013 ...or trick Catching Fire is cool - Drunk Monk - 11-18-2013 But a tepid cover of Tears for Fears? Ella dear, follow the example of that other great O'Connor songstress and go reggae. Catch a Fire! prophesy fulfilled - Drunk Monk - 12-08-2013 Continuing the Lorde Covers theme - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 03-02-2014 In Auckland, no less. T performed Royals - Drunk Monk - 06-10-2014 T was in a class called 'teen voices' through our local performing arts center. At their recital last Sunday, the girls performed a cappella. She had the finale solo song (granted, there were only 4 songs performed) and it was Royals. And she nailed it. I was so proud. T and I reflected on Royals. We both remember when we first heard it. We were in my car in Menlo - I was picking her up from school. What a journey that tune put us on. Not only a PPFY doppleganger... - Drunk Monk - 07-25-2014 ...still the master of musical parody. Yea, that's great... - Drunk Monk - 07-25-2014 ...so is Tacky Good to see Weird Al back on top. 10/2 @ Greek - Drunk Monk - 10-05-2014 It was a long ride to get there - from Fremont, to Morgan Hill to pick up T, then to the Greek, all at rush hour. It was hot, but that made for a perfect night at the Greek, with a stunning sunset over SF. The show was nearly sold-out (the previous night was SO; this was the 2nd added show). T is eager to start working for RM but there were plenty of EMTs ready-2-go, so we just posed and watched the whole show. Nice crowd, mostly teen girls, some parents, a few Lorde-a-likes. Magical cloudz opened. 2 guys, 1 on synth keys. Too emo. Lorde has got her sound together now, along with a dynamic set - a triptych video screen, lots of smoke machines, a smoke-filled bubble machine, an artsy light-up mandala tryptych, a chandelier and confetti cannons. However she still resists the typical pop diva showwomanship as her dancing is frantic and unchoreographed and she tends to sing bent over. In fact, she moves a little like Bob Marley on stage, hyperactively jumping to some music that's a moment ahead of the beat, constantly waving her leonine mane like an antennae net trawling for the muse. Her voice is still rich and she bends her singing like a true musician instead of just reciting like most pop divas. And she still feels quite genuine when she chats up the audience. She did do three costume changes tho - from a black sleeveless top and gypsy pants to a white diaphanous top and gypsy pants then to a red top, cape and gypsy pants. She only bared a little midriff, keeping her navel prudently covered like I Dream of Jeannie, far from the sex kitten attire of most pop divas. It was a great show, but it made me feel old. mockingjay - Drunk Monk - 10-16-2014 |
