Richmond, Va - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 04-19-2013

I was there for 5 days. They say it is a historic city; they lie. I say it is a hotel, a venue, and an airport. That's all I saw, so there can't be anything else.

5 days of fried food and bad coffee, stressed out children waving swords about semi-ineffectually. That 3-hour difference is a killer when you have to be in the venue and focused at 7am local time.

It was fun catching up with old friends who are now either coaching or reffing.

That's why I get up super early all the time. Makes the constant time zone hopping possible.

Coffee-wise, I just make do with freebies from the referee's lounge (more like a holding pen). Per longstanding custom, if I'm coaching and Burchard is reffing, he will supply me with free coffee and gossip. In turn, I tell him who is making good calls and who sucks as a ref.

I'll even drink "contingency coffee" (aka: Starfucks). The trick is to get 4 shots of espresso in the smallest damn cup they have, then poor in some 1/2&1/2. It actually ain't bad when you do that.

DM: It was Div 1 National Championships (national team selection points, so tough guys/gals) and then a Youth circuit attached to it. We did great in the Div 1 foil (first year we didn't win it in several years, but we had to be content with silver and both bronzes). Div 1 is held separately from Summer National Championships due to the timing of World Championships/Olympics. To make matters more enjoyable, Junior/Cadet World Championships was being held at the same time, so some of the fencers got to fly back directly from Croatia and compete in Richmond.
