Fearless - Drunk Monk - 02-28-2006

Everybody say "Huo Yuan Jia" - that's the real title of Jet Li's latest, released in Asia for Chinese New Year 2006. It's slated for US theatrical release in August by the same company that did Unleashed, so I'm hoping we'll throw another sneak preview. Of course, you'll all be invited again. Cross your fingers.

Huo Yuan Jia is the historic founder of Chin Woo, one of the most venerated kung fu organizations in the world today. He is the master that dies in Bruce's Fist of Fury and Jet's Fist of Legend. This film is a classic kung fu flick akin to OUATIC and Fong Sai Yuk, only with post-Hero/CTHD production values. There's some great fights, including a western fencing vs. kung fu sword seen that made me think of you fencing brothers, but the best stuff happens early making the final fight anticlimactic - same problem with Jackie Chans' Myth, actually. Jet turns in a fine performance, both acting and action. The version I saw had only Chinese subtitles, but I think I figured out most of the plot rather easily. It's a simple plot, and I'm very familiar with the following "fist" movies as well as the history, so I knew exactly how it was going to end. I'd show it at a DOOM gathering if I could get a subtitled version early, but those are very hard to come by due to the uupcoming US release.

August 4th - Drunk Monk - 03-01-2006

I just got the press packet from Rogue Pictures. The premiere date is set at August 4th, but of course, I'll be at Reggae on the River then. Bummer. That gets a bit awkward if I spearhead another sneak preview like we did with Unleashed. But I will still do so, just because I can, and arrange for all of you to have tickets if you want them, assuming it comes together. I just won't be there. No big. I've already seen it.

You should do one in Los Angeles - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 03-01-2006

I here people that make movies live around here and that might be helpful to publicize it. Plus, I could do with the free movie thing.

Fencing vs Kung Fu? - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-05-2006

If you can find "Forbidden Arsenal" there is a bit such a scene in there. Good, obscure crime flick with reps from the htree Chinas (Mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan) working to crack an arms smuggling ring.

fencing vs. kung fu - Drunk Monk - 03-07-2006

I hear you can also see some good fencing vs. kung fu in the windows of gay warehouse parties when they have 'all white night'. Confusedhock:

I now have Fearless on DVD - Drunk Monk - 03-09-2006

Still no English subtitles though and the resolution isn't that great. I'm not even sure if it plays all the way through. But I have it now, which puts me way ahead of the curve in the kung fu cinema fan world. At least the job has some perks...

Tomato Tomato - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 03-21-2006

I keep seeing the title and I keep expecting to talk about the Jeff Bridges film and the airplane crash. Don't eat the strawberries, Jeff!!!

Fear the lawyers - Drunk Monk - 03-27-2006

Huo Yuan Jia's family is suing Jet Li over Fearless now...

And now for something completely different - Drunk Monk - 05-22-2006

Here's the music video for FEARLESS. You'll see some of the fencing scene as well as some Chinese Ricky Martin wannabe...

Thanks, DM for the proof - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 05-22-2006

No matter what language, boy bands are always bad. Especially when they lipsync to the girl parts. At least, I think those were the girl parts.

Tell me again why Jet Li didn't kick this guy's ass?

Why Jet didn't kich this guys ass.... - Drunk Monk - 05-22-2006

Because unlike Jackie, Jet can't sing.

I have the official trailer on DVD - Drunk Monk - 06-11-2006

Rogue FedExed me the trailer on DVD. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it, but I appreciate the gesture.

I'm told that the trailer is playing with X-Men. Is it?

- El Dingo - 06-23-2006

Just looted a copy of this from a Hong Kong merchant vessel.

DM (or is it YT?) is right. The first 2 fight scenes were very cool. Fights on raised platforms are always fun, but I would have liked to have seen more leaping from platform to platform, and running up and down the stairs. I like when they run up and down the stairs.

The other enjoyable bout was against the American. It's getting a little cliche' having the giant no-neck caucasian shouting 'AAARRRRRGGGGHH' and running at the little oriental man with the ponytail, but 'Fearless' made it work and the way the end was handled was a nice surprise.

Unfortunately the movie started to drag at this point. I was just waiiting for the final fight which (as DM pointed out) was anticlimactic.

A nice film but probably more culturally meaningful to a Chinese audience.

- Dr. Ivor Yeti - 07-02-2006

Yes, the trailer is playing before X-Men III. The trailer was way better than XMIII. I will rant about XMIII in the appropriate venue.
