Dhoom 2 - Drunk Monk - 03-16-2012

If Brother Scapino were to ever make a Bollywood film about DOOM, this would be it.

Ash as a ninja - Drunk Monk - 03-16-2012

Ash doesn't appear until about the hour mark and then she's in a ninja cowl, which is really silly. Ninja cowls cover everything but the eyes and Ash has the most recognizable pair of peepers of anyone. The next scene is her big dance number, the high point of the film for sure. The song is stuck in my head - what Stephen King calls an 'earworm' - unfortunately, the only lyric line in English that stuck out was the chorus.

'sexy lady on the floor - keep you coming back for more'

I have been trying my hardest not to sing that aloud here at the office.

Re: Dhoom 2 - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 03-16-2012

Everyone applauds your efforts to not sing.

Everyone calls it an earworm. Plus, I learned the hindu word for crazy. It's 'Crazy'

There was a sword... - Drunk Monk - 03-16-2012

It was one of the objects d'arte that was stolen.

The action scenes are some of the stupidest ever. EVER!

A weird thing about this flick is that it jumps back and forth between English and Hindu constantly. Sometimes the subtitles jam that up because they don't always match the English.

This film broke box office records for Bollywood.

Stupidest action scene ever. EVER! - Drunk Monk - 03-22-2012

So Dhoom is about a thief who steals internationally cherished art. He steals a coveted diamond that is kept in the center of a Greco-Roman style circular room with armed guards constantly marching around it in a circle. How does he do it?

Well, first he disguises himself as one of the Greco-Roman half-relief statues in the wall by painting himself white. Not sure how he got there exactly, but the guards don't notice. Then he maneuvers a black bot that is the size of a laptop between the guard's legs. There's a black swirl pattern on the floor to camouflage the bot. The guards don't notice. The bot has a robot arm that steals the diamond. It is replaced by a hologram projected from a single device the size of a tin of chaw. When the guards block the projector, the diamond hologram disappears. The guards don't notice. Then he gets out of that room somehow. The guards notice once he's out and a chase ensues, but that's uneventful in comparison.

All throughout, the soundtrack chants 'Dhoom' which is really funny because that sounds like DOOM. And I think of Scapino. I think of Scapino because of the gratuitous slow motion walking scenes where the hero is looking cool. I think that's how Scapino used to see himself. I suspect he would hate this film.

DOOM alert!! - Drunk Monk - 09-26-2012

If this plays in the USA, we so gotta see it.

Action thriller Dhoom 3 is set to be the first Indian film presented as a giant screen IMAX feature.

Dhoom 3 will be filmed conventionally and digitally remastered to IMAX sound and image standards.

It is set for release at an unspecified 'winter' date in 2013 on conventional and giant screens. In India IMAX has 14 screens either in operation, under construction or contracted. The film may also play at IMAX theatres in overseas.

Dhoom 3 is produced by Yash Raj Films and comes after the 2004 and 2006 previous instalments in the franchise about a straight-laced cop and his scatter-brained partner. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the new film sees the return of Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra alongside Katrina Kaif. Superstar, Aamir Khan plays their "charismatic and versatile" enemy.

"Our network growth in India has reached a point where we're now able to present local-language films in IMAX, which is paramount to our success in the region," said Greg Foster, chairman and president, IMAX Filmed Entertainment.

The first non-English-language film to be produced in Asia was the Chinese film Aftershock, with China-Hong Kong co-production directed by Tsui Hark Flying Swords of Dragon Gate the first in 3-D IMAX. Leading Chinese studio Huayi Brothers Media recently agreed to produce a slate of films in the format.

India's Yash Raj Films has struck a multi picture deal with IMAX to give the large screen treatment to a slate of upcoming features.

YRF has previously committed to scaling up its now in production action thriller Dhoom: 3. Under the expanded partnership, Shekhar Kapur's upcoming Paani will also be given the IMAX treatment.

Paani is Kapur's long planned futuristic tale of a city in which water is the most precious commodity. The film is expected to have a strong Indian and Western star cast, headed by a young leading actor from India and a young leading actress from the west.

"As we continue to grow our network across India, we are committed to offering the nation's growing IMAX fan base an elevated movie-going experience that transports them into Bollywood's best," said IMAX Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster in a statement.

Speaking at the FICCI-Frames convention in Mumbai today, Foster said that IMAX expects to have 10 operational theatres in India by the end of this year. He added that that number could grow to 30-40 within two further years.

"Since announcing the IMAX release of Dhoom:3, we've seen tremendous anticipation building among Indian moviegoers around this first-ever IMAX release of a Hindi feature film, and we're excited to add to this excitement with two more of our highly anticipated films, including our most ambitious one, Paani," said Aditya Chopra, chairman.

Paani will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology for presentation in IMAX theatres.

The Dhoom trilogy on Netflix - Drunk Monk - 09-14-2014

So a started watching Dhoom 1. It feels like a totally different movie than Dhoom 2. Well, except for the constant chanting of 'Dhoom' in the soundtrack. Dhoom 2 is a buddy flick, straight-laced cop and a petty clown thief who has the hots for his wife, who is super hot, so that's somewhat understandable. It's kind of like Fast and Furious, but with motorcycles. A band of pizza delivers swap their mopeds for nitrous-super-charged bikes. Just like Dhoom 2 reminded me of Scapino, Dhoom 1 reminded me of Greg during the Domino years. Okay, not really. I've gotten as far as the intermission and will see it through, but it pales in comparison to the astounding absurdity of Dhoom 2. Plus, no Ash.

Dhoom 1 is skipable - Drunk Monk - 09-15-2014

I should mention that the tie is Jai Dixit, the cop, and his goofy lovelorn buddy Ali. His hottie wife is named Sweety, just in case you're wondering. The film picks up a little after the intermission with the introduction of Sheena, a villianess who wears a tight t-shirt that says 'hottie' just in case you didn't notice. She's a singer, which allows her to debut in the film's top Bollywood number, a concert where we we hear the titular song Dhoom Machale and learn from the subtitles that Dhoom means 'rock'...or maybe not because one subtitle given for a chorus of the song is completely wrong when the lyrics are sung in English (but it still rhymed). That's really the best scene - the only scene worth watching - because the theft reaches the level of true absurdity seen in Dhoom 2 where a ball of of money gets stolen right from stage because the motorbike thieves are hidden under the stage and have rigged the floor with fuel so their escape route bursts into flame on either side to protect them with the cool toss of a lit zippo. Fortunately the crowd disperses, clearing the path, which leaves questions like didn't they notice the smell of fuel underneath them? Or maybe the long parallel paths that looks like one of those fire pits you walk over barefoot to show your mind over matter? What's more, how did the cops miss four guys on motorbikes hidden under the stage right next to where the money was stored?

The finale is a casino caper where they somehow manage to stuff a room full of cash into four suitcases (the room is super full - shelf after shelf - with one shelf easily filling all the cases). Then there's the final duel, lots of wirework a top a moving semi - it's clear that they've been heavily influenced by Jackie and Woo Ping, but they got no Kung Fu, so it looks super silly.

No sword fights. Confusedad:

Dhoom 1 was a major blockbuster in India, but it's really all about Dhoom 2. It's one of those cases where the sequel was far superior.

And yes, I will watch Dhoom 3, as soon as I need another Bollywood fix. I'm doing it for you guys, my dear DhOOM Bros. Cuz one of us must know.

OK, here's that concert and Dhoom Machale:

Re: Dhoom 2 - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 09-15-2014

Sorry. I'm waiting for Dhoomnado.

I was going to give you a 'FTW' for Dhoomnado, Greg.... - Drunk Monk - 09-16-2014

...then I saw Dhoom 3.

Dhoom 3 rocks.

It delivers everything I want from a Bollywood film and more. Jai Dixit and Ali are on the case again, in Chicago no less. Their opening fight scene is almost an homage to Jackie Chan's Police Story where they drive through a shantytown on a hill. And it's totally outrageous as fight scenes go - very entertaining gratuitous slo-mo. But where this film really shines is the villain. Aamir Khan delivers a brilliant complex performance that totally blew me away. I must check out more of his films. He has tremendous range as an actor, is physically yoked yet dances well, and has those Raymond Burr eyes that can go totally psycho. Adding an Alex DeLarge bowler hat really accentuates his maliciousness and style. Jai and Ali fall to the wayside, in the shadow of Khan's villain. And there's Katrina Kaif too, who has a face reminiscent of Andie MacDowell, but can really dance - she's got amazing moves. You can't take your eyes off her. The villains are part of the Great Indian Circus, which is like Cirque Du Soleil Indian-style and gives the opportunity for some great dance numbers. And the story took some surprising turns - or at least they caught me off guard because I wasn't expecting much.

No sword fights but there's a gang with machetes and a motorbike duel with metal pipes. The action sequences do get ridiculously silly at points with absurd Bollywood physics (slightly different than Kung Fu physics or Looney Tune physics, but in a parallel universe) but that makes them even more entertaining. Some great motorbike fu, on the level with John Woo's Mission Impossible II.

Strangely, Dhoom Machale is translated not as 'rock' but as 'wreck havoc'. Whatev. I don't really want to know what it means anymore.

It would have been good in 3D in the beginning as there were many scenes with stuff floating in the air - snow, ash, money, and such - but it was post-production so the following 2 hours of the film would not have benefited much. It's a gorgeous film tho - the most expensive to date for Bollywood and one of their biggest blockbusters. If you want to see Bollywood today, this Dhoom 3 is a good place to start.

Now I must rewatch Dhoom 2. Perhaps I misjudged it.

I hope they make Dhoom 4.

Re: Dhoom 2 - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 09-16-2014

Wait, Ash is in this film in the beginning and she looks good in 3-D? I'm in.

Ash is in Dhoom 2. That's how this all got started for me. - Drunk Monk - 09-16-2014

How many Bollywood films have you actually seen, Greg? Actually, same question goes out to all of you. Well, all of you except CF, as I know he's seen some because we've discussed it at length before.

Name what you've seen and, if you remember, what you thought.

Sadly . . . . - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 09-16-2014

Slumdog Millionaire comes to mind. But I'm guessing you are going to say that doesn't count.

That totally doesn't count. - Drunk Monk - 09-18-2014

That's like saying "I saw Carradine's old Kung Fu TV series so I've seen Kung Fu movies."

No wait, that's not what it's like.

It's like saying "I saw Big Trouble in Little China"

No, that's not right either.

Heck, I don't know what that's like saying but it doesn't count.

You might check out Dhoom 3 then, upon your return there, Greg. A filmmaker like you needs to have a better sense of what Bollywood is about. Like with Tarantino and Grindhouse, there's a lot of style that can be poached. Although if you asked me my fav recommendation for a Bollywood film, it would be Devdas. (see viewtopic.php?f=6&t=573). That's rentable via iTunes, and I've been flirting with seeing it again there.

I started re-watching Dhoom 2 last night. I get it much better now. Surprisingly, it is a true sequel to Dhoom 1, so it makes more sense after having seen that. I don't think Dhoom 3 suffers from this as much - it stands on its own much better.

NOTE to CF: Amir Khan of Dhoom 3 was the lead in Lagaan.
