Tokyo String Quartet @ Herbst Theater 2/12/12 - Drunk Monk - 02-13-2012 We had seats in the first box, stage left. Very cool. I wish I had brought my opera glasses to spy on the crowd. 1st violinist Martin Beaver struck me as haughty at first, but damn, he has the touch. Couldn't quite hear the viola from our angle. The Paganini quartet, their legendary Stradivarius instruments, are so warm and lush. I totally got the whole Stradivarius thing. The Haydn piece (G Major, Op 77, No. 1) made me fantasize about sitting next to Marie Antoinette eating cake. Bartok (No. 3 Sz. 85), which is why we went, was like a gothic horror movie soundtrack. Great complicated moody stuff. Schubert (quintet C Major, Op 163, D. 956) was added another guest celloist and was too repetitive and fluffy. Too much plucking. Very engrossing and staggeringly complex music - too much for me to fully wrap my head around, but I was entertained nonetheless. |
