Let the Bullets Fly (2010) - El Dingo - 02-09-2012

Did I miss the thread on this? I tried searching for 'Bullets' but got no hits:

Let the Bullets Fly (IMDB)

Is it awesome or just great?

no hits on 'bullets' here? how can that be? - Drunk Monk - 02-10-2012

This one has been on my list for a spell, but I haven't acquired a copy yet. It's just got a US distributor, so that should make it easier.

I know, I know. I've been lagging.

irreverent but not totally over the top - Drunk Monk - 02-26-2012

There's some really good stuff in this flick. Jiang Wen is great, and I forgot how much I enjoy Chow. CYF takes on a dual role and totally nails both. I forgot what a great comedian he can be. I think a lot of the puns are lost in translation, and if you don't have a basic grasp of Confucian hierarchy and etiquette, as well as mahjong, a lot might seem nonsensical. But enjoyable overall. More gun fights than sword fights.

Thanks for bringing this one up, ED. I'm glad I sought it.

Slate breaks it down - Drunk Monk - 02-29-2012

Check out this Slate article. It gives you a better sense about why this film is significant and why a lot of it just won't translate (puns lost in translation).

I really liked this film mostly because of the two male leads. There was a great sense of Charisma about them. And everybody looked like they were having a good time.

There were some wonky bits (What was up with dumping all the silver in the square?) but for the most part, the story was very enjoyable and not that hard to follow. I don't think I've seen CYF be light hearted before.
