The Last Station - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 01-23-2012 A beautiful boring film about the last days of Tolstoy's life of which I knew nothing about. Who knew that Tolstoy was behind a group know as the Tolstoyans who advocated the end to religion, celibacy, and distribution of wealth to the masses. And this was ten years before the start of communism. I rented this film because Christoper Plummer was supposed to be really good in it. And he was. Plus, it had Helen Mirren who always does a good job. And she does. Plus it had James McAvoy and Paul Giamatti. I usually watch Giamatti movies despite the fact the he is in them. Again, I didn't like him though he plays the role of a manipulative head of Tolstoyans with oily aplomb constantly waxing his mustache. Finally, a villain who spends his time twirling his mustache. It was a dull story about the power struggle over national hero Tolstoy's publishing rights between his wife, Mirren, and Giamatti. It was never that engrossing. The subplot of McAvoy's love story with an ugly girl was also dull. I kept waiting for a sword fight. |
