Rango - Drunk Monk - 03-14-2011

A Western featuring lizards inspired by Ralph Steadman art? I'm so in.

It's the fashion of kid's flicks to deliver homages to classics - it keeps the nerd parents interested. On that level, this film really worked for me as the homages were of many of my favs - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the Man-w/no-name series, Apocalypse Now, Star Wars, A Boy and His Dog, and so on. The story is very predictable. It's all about the style of Rango, which is visually very entertaining. The first half is very psychedelic, which DM enjoyed immensely of course. The second half sort of flattens out into more typical kid fare.

We didn't see this in 3D because of scheduling. I regret that now. Some of the early trippy sequences would have been greatly enhanced with some 3D action.

I give it a thumbs up, especially for my fellow HST fanboys. T laughed a lot and said it was 'good'. My mom liked it too, and was surprisingly un-weirded out by it's weirdness. I tried to get an opinion from my dad - he and I were great fans of the Man-w/no-name series and would always make time to watch those again and again, whenever they were repeated on TV, but my dad just gave his usual 'good' which means he understood the nature of the question at least, but there was no indicator that he got the connection.

Apparently there was no 3D version of Rango. That's lame. Rango would have been much better in 3D, IMO.

The Whole film was lame - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 08-19-2011

How could you mention all those movies and not say Chinatown.

The film was visually superb. I especially liked the bird fight sequences in the beginning.

But it seemed to me I could hear the voice of the director and star say "Wouldn't it be cool if . . . ." and then they put, what they thought were cool pieces, together. So we had the dance for the water. We had the trip through the underground tunnels ala Lord of the Rings. We had the golfing. We had the man with no name. We had Jake the Snake.. Blah blah.

I say pass.
