Soulless: Bk 1the parasol protectorate by Gail Carriger - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 10-17-2009

It's Vampires and Werewolves in Victorian England with a dash of steampunk to give it flavor. Now before you click away, it's better than you think. It's not a another in the chain of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Although it does have the feel of a Jane Austin novel and that's a good thing.

In Victorian England, the powers that be have come to terms with Vampires and Werewolves. They have their own societies and voices in government that keep them from being persecuted and from eating the humans. But it's one big comedy of manors, with our heroine who by her touch weakens both Vamps and werewolves. But after she is attacked by an unschooled Vampire, she finds she has to work with the government and find out what's going on with the two societies.

It's all quite fun and very british and polite. It's all very twee as well. I'm waiting for the next one. Dammit. As soon as I finish one trilogy, I get roped in by a series that's just beginning. Time to read manuals.

I thought twee was my realm and you stuck with the dark, depressing thousand-pagers with names with too many syllables.

If you're in the mood for light-hearted (not twee, just fun), I'm definitely going to have to buy you the Rosenfelts. I'd suggest you get it from the library, but our dog ate the first book and that's kind of critical.

This was described as "what Pride and Prejudice and Zombies wanted to do". It is a Victorian romance with Vampires, Werewolves, and humor (spelt "humour"). Very entertaining. Describing her social-climbing mother "she was prone to wearing yellow and engaging in bouts of hysteria".

I think this book has already been reviewed here . . . . But I did like this book

Re: Soulless by Gail Carriger - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 12-26-2009

What?! Someone else besides me reads? I was certain I was the only one in the whole world. Hmph.

Well, some one else reads the FORUM here... - Drunk Monk - 12-28-2009

...oh whither HK? He could merge these and save us all...

HK has evolved into pure energy and Ascended. We'll just have to wait until he gets kicked out of the "Ascended Pure-Energy Beings" Club for not taking it seriously.

I am so dominating the forum. I have twice merged today. I think I will shower.

You are perilously close to "Ascending". Be careful in that shower...

Book II: Changeless. Scottish werewolves. Dirigible ride. Victorian manners. Good fun.

Re: Soulless: Bk 1the parasol protectorate by Gail Carriger - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 04-11-2010

I am waiting for them to ship it to me. Just finished Transition by Ian Banks. Good head twister.

Re: Soulless: Bk 1the parasol protectorate by Gail Carriger - The Queen - 04-12-2010

Oh good! Looking forward to it.

Re: Soulless: Bk 1the parasol protectorate by Gail Carriger - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 04-14-2010

I put Transitions down to read Changeless and the new Mike Carey Naming of the Beasts (if you haven't started this series by now, put down your camera, quit getting kicked in your Iron Crotch, step away from the computer, harness up the dogs and go get them)! NOW!

Re: Soulless: Bk 1the parasol protectorate by Gail Carriger - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 04-14-2010

So? They're good? Better than the Tao Te Ching by Ursula K. LeGuin? I don't think I can put down the camera.

Wait a second trickster, I've already read these books based on your reccomendation. So, Ha. I'm going back to my Iron Crotch.

The book can wait - Drunk Monk - 04-14-2010

Focus on the crotch, Gr. You can read that book any old time. When the kilt lifts, it's all about the crotch.
