Crap. Waiting on another trilogy. Fortunately the second book is in transit at the Library. Unfortunately, there is no date for the third book as the second book was released a week ago. I really need to start traveling into the future more often.
Wow, what a depressing dark evil great book. What do you do when you find out you are an heir to a kingdom that's built on a drug and slave trade, that your wealth comes from evil? That's the problem faced by the four Akaran kids. And the answer isn't an easy one and things don't work out nicely in the end. I loved it. Ah, depression, my old friend. I really like the evil in darkness in all the new fiction. I wonder if it's a reflection on our times? Nothing in these books is as it seems. There are no heroes. And all the things we think are good are based on bad. How can you not like a book like that?
I'd say more but I don't want to spoil the dark fun for you.

That's what I'm going to call this sub-genre.

It's definitely the middle book. The scope of the world expands. The rotten characters (I'm looking at you eldest daughter) get more rotten. But there is no big resolution or tragedy to rap up the book. It's just the things that happen to get us to third book. It's the soul searching and motivations book. If you want huge heroics or damnable perfidy, you will have to wait for the third.
So, I am waiting . . . . I wonder how George R.R. Martin is doing?
