The Forever War - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 03-27-2009

Excited? Appalled?

Ridley Scott is going to do a version of Forever War. He's always been a great visualist but he's always lacked the story chops. Maybe a great book will help? But he's looking to James Cameron for inspiration. I am very conflicted.

Quote:Ridley Scott, who is developing a film version of Joe Haldeman's seminal SF war novel The Forever War, told reporters in Britain that James Cameron's Avatar is inspiring him to shoot War in 3-D, according to SlashFilm.

"I'm filming a book by Joe Haldeman called Forever War," Scott reportedly said. "I've got a good writer doing it. I've seen some of James Cameron's work, and I've got to go 3-D. It's going to be phenomenal."

First published in 1974, The Forever War chronicles the interstellar war between humanity and the enigmatic Tauran species.

I've heard about this one for a while. Could be really good, but when they say that it is based on a book and we have a good writer on it (obviously not author of said book) I worry.

This was one of the earliest writings on Vietnam by a 'Nam vet. No one in the mainstream press would publish anything 'Nam related at the time, so Joe went SciFi with a pretty nifty allegory. Will that come through in the movie? Still valid after all of this time, esp. now with our troops occupying foreign lands.

Ridley Scott needs to go back to Aliens. BoL was so close, lots of nice details, decent performances (if you can believe DiCaprio as a Islamic spy) but in the end, remarkably unsatisfactory.
