RE: Iron Crotch - Greg - 10-06-2024

Nope. The Mind Reader returned. He gave me a few more names to reach out to like Caxton Fung and Yanqing Ding. Master Yao is currently back in China.

RE: Iron Crotch - Drunk Monk - 10-06-2024

I don’t remember Caxton but I remember Ding.

I always love the names of the moves

RE: Iron Crotch - Greg - 10-06-2024

I think Caxton was on stage with Yan Yao at the Anniversary banquet.

I do too. They're called 'quanpu' which literally means 'fist lyrics'. They are often based upon chengyu, which are rhyming idiomatic character sets, which I also love. Sometimes they're just descriptive like 'Horse stance, right punch.' Other times they are very evocative and poetic like 'monkey grabs the peach' (crotch grab).

I've themed many articles using quanpu as subheads.

Perhaps. Those can be so blurry for me because I'm juggling umpteen things in my brain, as you know, but I thought a name like Caxton would stick out. Sometimes Chinese choose odd 'western' names. There was this kid at Lam Kwoon who chose 'Radium' as his western name. He was quite the little nerd but ended up in HK film biz doing bts work. That was his dream and I never thought he'd make it.

Today I looked up how much a "cattie" was.

1.1 pounds.

RE: Iron Crotch - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 10-10-2024

"Caxton" was a medieval English printer, yes?

RE: Iron Crotch - Greg - 10-11-2024

That Yeti is smart like anything.

"William Caxton: An English printer and translator who lived from 1422 to 1491. In 1475, he published the first book printed in English in Bruges, and in 1477 he established the first printing press in England. Caxton's books are all in black letter"

RE: Iron Crotch - King Bob - 10-11-2024

You neglected to mention that Caxton is known for his edition of Le Morte d'Arthur - at least that's where I first heard of him.

RE: Iron Crotch - Greg - 10-15-2024

It would have been nice to have Caxton agree to do the interview earlier yesterday than last thing before I went to bed. At least he agreed. I'll probably be back next week, cameras in tow.

RE: Iron Crotch - Greg - 10-15-2024

Still haven't heard back from Ding.

Now for everyone's fav D00M4M game where DM corrects Greg on his pithy assumptions.

The catty is relative to country. In PRC, it's 1.1 lbs. In Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Korea, it's 1.3 lbs. In Hong Kong and some of the other little dragons (not Taiwan), it's a little more.

Now is where it gets tricky for you - what source are you referencing to get to this? Was that source from PRC or Taiwan...or elsewhere?

The best metaphor for Chinese culture is a Chinese box. Open a box and find another box inside. If you don't find the next box, you aren't really researching it at any depth. Such is the nature of one of the oldest cultures in the world. Tread warily. Next thing you know, Simu Liu will be trending with more cultural appropriation accusations...

RE: Iron Crotch - Greg - 10-16-2024

I saw both 1.1 and 1.3 in my cursory search. Using either I can get a rough estimate of how much weight they are talking about in 72 consummate Arts. As opposed to winging it and figuring a Cattie is how much a cat weighs.

RE: Iron Crotch - Drunk Monk - 10-16-2024

I thought as much. That’s a tricky one because the origins of the book are dubious. I’d lean towards the Taiwan measure because it first surfaces around the ROC period despite its claims.

Or you could mention the discrepancy, which is what I would do. You might not have the time though.

RE: Iron Crotch - Greg - 10-17-2024

You don't know how worried you are until the worry lifts.

I've been emailing Sandy Tu, Mrs. GM Tu, since I started the project. I talk to Sandy because she is the gate keeper. I didn't get a single response to any of my emails. It would be a pretty crappy documentary if I didn't get the focus of the documentary in the actual documentary. I imagined that Sandy was done with me because it had been so long since last we spoke. I would not blame her. But I kept sending emails.

It was kind urgent that I talk to them, because I was under the impression GM Tu was back in Los Angeles. There was a post saying he was coming back to Los Angeles to start up an Iron Crotch class. If you don't know, for the longest time, GM Tu has divided his time between his school here and his school in Taipei. The main focus of his location changed about eight years ago to weight lifting. More specifically power lifting. I was unsure if they did any martial arts classes there. If I couldn't film GM Tu in Los Angeles, I was seriously considering going to Taipei to film him there. Where the money for that adventure would come from, I have no idea. But if I had to go, I would.

On Tuesday, The Queen got a request from a friend for a house sitter down in Los Angeles over the Halloween week. She asked me if I wanted to house sit so I could be in Los Angeles for my interviews. This would be a great solution to the problem of where would I stay when I was down there doing interviews. I do have the one potential interview with the Jade Egg lady that was supposed to occur end of October/beginning of November. As yet Jade Egg lady has not responded to follow up emails to set a date, but still.

I was kind of running out of hope with respect to the Tu's. My last stab would be to call them. I have an old phone number for them, but I was hesitant to call them for fear of waking them up in Taiwan when I rang. I also had a number for the gym in Los Angeles. Since things were heating up because I had the place to stay. I decided I would call the gym.

Surprise, surprise, I reached one of the Tu kids, Jenny. She was at the wedding. She is running a chinese medicine clinic out of the gym. She recognized my name and knew who I was. She was busy but would be available later in the day to talk about GM Tu. I called Jenny after five and we talked for quite a bit. GM Tu was indeed in town and would be for a while. He would be coming to Northern California, of course, for a few of the days I will be in Los Angeles, but then he will back. Jenny is going to check the schedule and get back to me when GM Tu will be available for an interview. I also asked for some calligraphy and possibly a lift. But I will be overjoyed with an interview.

Things are looking up.

Still waiting to hear back from my reluctant interviewee in the Bay Area for next week.
