RE: COVID-19 - Greg - 01-06-2022

Talked to Scapino today after reading one of his posts on FB.

Sad to report, his father is in the ICU with Covid. He is getting oxygen but not on a ventilator. His mother has it as well but is not as sick. She was healthy enough to receive monoclonal antibody treatment.

Fuck.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 01-06-2022

Ouch. Where is Scapino's dad living nowadays?

Man, omicron is lighting up my circle like an xmas tree. So many more people I know have come down with it, more so than ever before. Are you all experiencing the same surge amongst your circle?

RE: COVID-19 - Greg - 01-06-2022

He is down in Arizona near Flagstaff, I think.

Scapino's dad is the first case I've heard. But that's the closest. They recently announced the first case of Omicron in Madera County.

Ohmygodicron is everywhere. I even tested for it this past Tuesday (negative). When the "mild cold symptoms" match your almost every day, it's hard to know when to pull that trigger. Never had a fever, but baseline muscle/joint pain was exceeded, headache was present, but when is it not? My sinuses have been kicking my ass for a month. Slight difficulty in breathing? A little, but then I have mild asthma and blood clots in my lungs. Today I feel great. Go figure.

This weekend is a NAC, a big-ass North American fencing tournament in San Jose. I have chosen not to attend.

What kind of test did you do? A home kit? I was bummed that the price of home testing kits dropped significantly after I took one following LiB especially when I could e got one free from RM but forgot.

I’m hunkering down a little more and upping to a K95 instead of my cloth masks. Still hand sanitizing in an ocd way but I always did that even prior to Covid.

RE: COVID-19 - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 01-07-2022

They are hard to find here (and everywhere, I think) so I texted Greg & Vivian Massialas, since they travel a lot and have to get tested frequently. They had a kit and dropped it off to me. It was a little disposable unit that was battery-powered (batteries included). Kinda impressive.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 01-07-2022

The tricky thing about omicron is that there's a gestation period so you might be positive even when you test negative in the early stages.

But don't live in fear. I'm told that's bad for some reason...

RE: COVID-19 - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 01-08-2022

Not to mention false negatives in general. Take the amount of risk you are comfortable with, is how I look at it. H is very risk-averse, I am less so. I ain’t no Spread-Neck, though!

RE: COVID-19 - Greg - 01-08-2022

Wait! You people leave the house????

RE: COVID-19 - King Bob - 01-08-2022

We don't go too many places, but yesterday Christina wanted get a housewarming gift for her friend from Heath, so we decided to go to the store in SF instead of ordering online, and we also ate (inside!) at Tartine next door. It was the first time I've had to show my vaccine card, and the second time I've eaten indoors since early 2020. FYI, the smoked mushroom tartine was excellent (I recommend adding the egg), and the crispy potatoes were also.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 01-08-2022

The other spooky thing about home tests is that positives don’t figure into the stats. Only official medical institutions feed into that. So the omicron spike has hidden numbers that are much greater.

Yeah, I live in fear. I’m not afraid to admit that. That’s courage nowadays, right?

One of my authors has it. He’s in PA and is vaxxed. He closed his dojo for the holidays but has been working out lightly on his own because his case is mild. He was going to do an in-store signing in Feb for his new book, but the store closed due to infections among the staff.

I have several commitments next week where I’ll be amongst people indoors. Weighing my options…

RE: COVID-19 - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 01-08-2022

Dude, don't go if you don't hafta go. H's line is eating outside is ok, but not inside, so we bundle up and overtip the server.

RE: COVID-19 - Drunk Monk - 01-08-2022

Yeah that may be the call.

Another friend just tested positive. She’s a RN from my psych krew. She’s fully vaxxed but has a high exposure potential from work. She says she feels exhausted as of with a bad flu.

RE: COVID-19 - King Bob - 01-08-2022

It was a bit out of character for us. I doubt we'll do it again any time soon.
