RE: Doom Dogs - Drunk Monk - 06-02-2023

Yuki has been rubbing his face up against everything. His snout is a bit red on the right side. We took him in and the vet thought it was allergies. She gave him a shot that’s supposed to last a month and some healing tool for his ear which has gotten mildly infected again. We checked his records and his ear had issues last year at this time, supporting the seasonal allergy theory.

Hopefully it’ll all pass with the season. The vet said it’s been a hard season for allergies. I can personally attest to that. My eyes have been burning.

My mom's dog was acting like that. Turned out she had an interaction with a bee or wasp.

Yuki got stung as a pup so he’s cautious about that.

So...
Tell us of Aoife & Lily...

RE: Doom Dogs - Greg - 06-14-2023

We could have come home with five.

I’m at the dog park and shared your fb pix. Everyone enjoyed your shopping when hungry comment and agreed heartily.

The dog hunt started last week with a local foster Riley. That dog, a beautiful Shepherd mix, didn't quite fit. Plus, you don't just take the first dog you see. We had been online idly looking through petfinder as well to see what we could see. The Queen also had very specific needs about weight she wants a smaller dog that she can pick up and carry if there is an emergency.

Our second stop was the Eastern Madera County SPCA. They recently opened a gorgeous new facility near us that was privately funded. If I'm a stray, I want to end up there. Again, the porridge wasn't just right. The dog I was most interested in, Ari, we couldn't even touch as it was still in Quarantine.

After that visit, I suggested we look online at the main Madera Pound. That was the mistake. They had dozens of really good looking dogs. I don't know what it is about this area but the shelters are full of Husky mixes. Second most would be Great White Pyrenees. Neither dog breed does well in the kind of heat here in the foothills and the valley.

The Queen and I found a couple of dogs we would like to see online. I called up for an appointment as the shelter is appointment only. They said anytime. The Queen had time yesterday because it wasn't going to take that long to look at some dogs, right?

Wrong. From leaving the house to returning, the trip four hours. There were a lot of dogs to look at. A lot of them were good candidates. And we wanted to rescue all of them.

It was the typical pound. Plenty of chain link dog runs with sad dogs in them. Every pen you walked up to the dogs would excitedly lick your hand and implore you with their eyes to pick them. We could have walked away with any of five dogs. After a little talk we decided on Lilo and Ruby(Brandy?). The clinic suggested staggering the adoption, taking one now and another later, but it seemed wrong to put them back in the cage after taking them out the cage. I voted to take them all now.

Lilo became Lilly and Ruby/Brandy became Aoife. Lilly was used to her name because she was a lost dog and that was the name on her microchip. No one came to reclaim her. Aoife has probably been in the pound in her entire life. She came down from another pound in Chowchilla because they couldn't give her away. Currently, Aoife is in heat so we have blood drippings everywhere including on one of my socks. The techs at the pound said not to worry about the blood because Aoife would take care of that herself. Both dogs are going back to the pound potentially on Wednesday to get spayed.

At the pound, Aoife was very calm and docile. Lilly was a little more animated because she wanted to be out. Both their animation levels went to 11 once we got to the lair. Zooming around the house. Yelling at the cats. (The cats are pissed, by the way) The Queen and I are scratching our brains to come up with our dog training methods. Lily just wants to be hugged. Aoife needs to go out and run a couple of marathons.

Aoife is getting along with Maeve, while Lily has some problems. Lily doesn't want to share her new humans. There has been some growling and teeth baring, but we are working on it. Aoife has enjoyed peeing in the house several times while Lily can be coaxed to use the backyard. It took both of them a little less than a day to figure out the dog door.

The adventure commences. I hope we are up for it.

How old are they?

RE: Doom Dogs - Greg - 06-15-2023

Hard to say. Under a year. Maybe 11 months. We guess Aoife is younger than Lilly.

RE: Doom Dogs - King Bob - 06-15-2023

Best of luck.

RE: Doom Dogs - Greg - 06-15-2023

I'll need it.

RE: Doom Dogs - King Bob - 06-15-2023

But you get dogs, so a worthwhile trade off.

RE: Doom Dogs - Drunk Monk - 06-15-2023

Moar puppy pix please!

RE: Doom Dogs - Greg - 06-15-2023

If they ever sit still.

RE: Doom Dogs - Drunk Monk - 06-16-2023
