And the amoral of this story is.... - Drunk Monk - 03-11-2017

Alright. I get it. I'm sorry I'm bailing on the rough cut showing of the Last Captain. I'm a bad DOOM brother.  But you guys have known me since high school and I've always been a compulsive thief of the spotlight. It's compensation for my tiny hands, which I hide in wedding photos, especially when next to the Yeti because his littlest paw claw is as thick as my wrist. I apologize profusely and will make it up to you, Greg. Now step aside because it's my feckin spotlight here.

So back to me because it's really all about me.

Today is a training day. Thursday was grueling - a serious exam that went for hours under blinding spotlights and my 20/20 hindsight on the packed flight home has me thinking my B.S. replies might overshadow my correct ones, caught on camera for the world to see. The upcoming 5 days of filming - well, my castmates are hardcore - professional martial artists, actors and stuntmen. Bigger claws than Yeti's compared to my tiny mitts. I'm the oldest and smallest. WTH have I gotten into?

So I have a week to train. I've asked my Kung Fu sihing to help me refresh my guandao. That's coming up in an hour. Then I e tapped my ol' iaido classmate for a refresher in battojitsu (cutting). I haven't cut in over a decade. That's after lunch. I'll be training all day. While you all are enjoying the Last Captain, I'll probably be sore. Actually no. I must help Tara prep for India.

March came in like a lion. It goes out like a 3-headed sharktopus.

WTF? A week to train? - cranefly - 03-11-2017

A week to train?  That's crazy.

Two pieces of advice: 1) Go full-tilt.  2) Don't overdo it.

From a fitness standpoint (and from my aged experience), that's just long enough to get all stiff and achy.

Then again, I'm hardly qualified to be advising you.  You know your body better than anyone -- except William Holden.

Wow, what a ride you're on.  Hold tight to Buddha's ears.

It's not so bad.... - Drunk Monk - 03-11-2017

I never stopped training. It's just these specifics that I haven't touched in years.

Guandao came back pretty fast. Ted has one of Lam Sifu's first heavy ones and I can still handle it. Remember I started with Jan Har so I learned that early, before spear, so it's deep in my sinews. He also had a single and double ji, so I experimented. The length will be the only issue. I noodled with the wind & fires using deer horns. That'll be trickier. Using yang Tai Chi & tiger hooks.

Next up, cutting. I feel good now, but that's the endorphins talking. Man, I luv endorphins. Best. High. Ever.

Making the cut - Drunk Monk - 03-12-2017

My cutting skills are okay still - not awesome but decent. Cut a lot of bamboo with reasonable success. Just like with the guandao, I need to remember to let the weapon do the work.

Now I'm sore, but it's not as bad as I was expecting.

Journey to the South - cranefly - 03-17-2017

I suspect you're coming up on your Journey to the South.

Best wishes on that.  We're all riding along vicariously.

My only piece of advice is:  When in doubt, use the Oxford comma.

The reveal... - Drunk Monk - 03-17-2017

DOOM EYES ONLY HERE
STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL
No Russian hackers, microwaves, or Hilary emails please.

I've been hired to be an 'expert' on a new EL REY semi-scripted TV show called Man At Arms.  It's akin to History's Forged by Fire or Discovery's Big Giant Swords, a show about making ancient weapons.  This one spirals out of a successful web series - see https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUUGFk1wE5OHqeNDwp2q9_ZiPqKlWNc6V - the Stagmar brothers forge in Baltimore.  EL REY bought 8 episodes.

My co-stars (apart from the Stagmars) are Danny Trejo, Marko Zaror, Crystal Santos and Da'mon Stith.  Robert Rodriguez is slated to make a guest appearance.  Of course, I'm a huge fan of Trejo (he's soooo DOOM) and just search this forum for Zaror because I've been telling y'all to check him out for years now.

90% of the show is already in the can, shot in Baltimore at their forge.  The weapons are made, including a Mongol ballista.  I did some talking head stuff last Thursday and like I said earlier, it was really challenging.  Next week is all the set up - the frame for the show.  The cast assembles and there's group discussion of the weapons in a 'war room' set and then, there's weapon testing - they've got a lot of ballistic dummies, including a ballistic mummy for the Egyptian weapons.

I've been training all week with Guandao, which I feel pretty comfortable with now (it always was a mainstay form for me because I learned it early in my life).  The Chinese weapon is the ji, which is a large halberd and I can transfer that I think.  The other Chinese weapon is the Wind Fire Wheels - i've rebuilt some of my tiger hook form and some Tai Chi and might be able to fake it if called upon to do so.  I've also been doing my suburi (katana air cuts) and got a lesson last Saturday from an old iaido brother, but I don't feel nearly as confident about my cutting skills.  But in the end, I might only have to coach because Marko and Crystal are the pro stunt people.  I can coach.  I can coach the fuck out of shit.  I've been feeling strong until last night when some weird inexplicable pain erupted in my right foot - geeze disease.  Nerves.  It seems to have gone away now.

I have several dialog scenes with Danny, which is intimidating because he's Danny Trejo - the BAD ASS himself.  Did you know he has like 300 movies to his credit now? That's more than Jackie.  So that part is intimidating.

I will be paid handsomely.  The shooting schedule is intense - Mon thru Fri next week.  It's going to be brutal, but I can't imagine I'll be on set all the time.  Da'mon is the other expert so I'm in four eps and he's in four eps.  I'm not sure if I'll still have to be in the war room scenes for those.

I come home late Friday night only to get up super early and see my daughter off to India for the Mt. Mad school trip, one of the main reasons we put her in that school.  She'll be there for two weeks.  The timing is bad because I really want to be with her as she prepares for her journey, nor do I want to steal any of her spotlight.  But it's just too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Then I hop BART from SFO to Berkeley CMAT, who is also celebrating their 25th anniversary so they go two days.  Tiger Claw has booked me a room, but we cut out early on Sunday to make it to a Kung Fu school opening in Concord (major client), then I get dropped off in Menlo to reunite with Stacy who has clients there (her old office was there so she still has a lot of private clients in that area).

If the show goes as planned, it will premiere this summer.

It's going to be on helluva run, that's for sure.  I'm freaking out. FREAK. IN. OUT.  This is way outside my comfort zone.  But you guys know me.  It's just irresistible for so many reasons. If you feel as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced, that'll be DM leaving a nine mile skid on a ten mile ride in a flailing attempt to run wild and free like he did in the days of his misspent youth.

Wish me luck, DOOM brethren.

Arming up for man at arms - Drunk Monk - 03-18-2017

I got the general crew call list for Monday. I'm trying not to be intimidated by it. So much Hollywood stuff that I don't really understand. Plus it's in tiny print. But now I have Danny's & Marko's contact info.

RE: EL REY - Greg - 03-18-2017

Deep breaths. Everything will be okay.

Horoscope reading - cranefly - 03-18-2017

Okay, I just rechecked your Chinese horoscope, the one you put in your zines.  You're dragon, right?

Here goes for the period March 5 to April 4 of this year:

Quote:3/5-4/4: An article puts you high on the hilltop.  Fame follows.  Your work will be smooth and successful.

Oh, and here is the dragon quote you chose:

Quote:“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.”
Dragon Philip K. Dick

Just remember.  They're only actors.  Actors who've appeared in a gazillion things (Trejo has over 20 credits for 2017 alone!).

Thanks I think - Drunk Monk - 03-18-2017

You know I embellish the dragon scopes to improve my luck, right? That's funny that it says that though as that was written before this all came to pass.

Today's Kung Fu practice went well and I feel good about the Chinese ep, assuming they even call upon me to do that. It's really just the scenes opposite Trejo that are super intimidating. He's Bad Ass. He's Machete. Hes's a real life prison boxing champion.

Oh for the days when all I had to do was cozy up to Emily Beecham.

Getting in the zone - Drunk Monk - 03-18-2017

The show runner just called me to check in and give me a pep talk. He said there's a Ji is 36 Chambers according to EL REY's resident Shaw brother expert, which I do not remember, but I said I'd review it. Any excuse to watch that again. Maybe it's used by one of the villains in the final fight.

Research offer - cranefly - 03-18-2017

If something like that comes up again that you'd like researched but don't have the time, feel free ask on here.  I'd be able to track something like that down, give you the hours-minutes in, assessment, whatever.

Best wishes.

RE: EL REY - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-18-2017

You'll do fine. Get your zen on and remember that you already live a ridiculous life, Mr. Shaolin Trips Dude, so what's a little more?

Go get 'em!

Thanks brothers - Drunk Monk - 03-18-2017

I thought about asking you. Do you know any films with Ji or Wind Fire wheels? There are neither inany of the 36 chamber trilogy.
There's a wfw like Weapon in 5 element ninja & a single Ji in All men are brothers.
