Gas generators start at about $500. But then you have to keep filling them up with gas. Supposedly, PG&E is going to bury about 10,000 miles of power lines to alleviate the problem.

Given the hits PG&E is taking with the fire damage to the grid, don’t hold your Feckin breath on those new lines. Get the generator - keep the gas stored safely away.

There are also smaller battery + solar array setups like RV people use, but I don't know how much power you get. I considered it for our emergency gear, but since they start at around $500, it didn't seem worth it for a rarely or never used backup. We're in a section of the grid with a hospital, so our power rarely goes out.

The dogs stayed barking around 9pm. I went outside to see what caused the commotion. My guess was raccoons. Turned out rain was the source of the commotion. Cool! September Rain! The first lightning blast hit at the same time. Bad. Maeve hates lightning because it presages thunder. But she remained asleep on the bed. Then the power went out. Maeve awoke and whined and cried until 4am until I took her out for her morning Dogwalk. Neither the Queen or I got any sleep.
PG&E said power would be restored by 2:45. They lied. Current estimate is 10am.
I think they shut off the power because of the lightning storm. The only problem with that theory is the power was still on in Mariposa County despite all the lightning crashing around it. I watched the storm from deck after I walked the dog.

Rather than spending all that lucre on a new generator, I'll be spending it on brake repair. My brakes make a really terrible noise and they gave out for a few seconds yesterday. Plus the ABS light came on. Good times.
