1899 - Drunk Monk - 11-18-2022

THE WIDOW!!!

I must watch. Team Widow forever.

The widow has top billing for this new series. She plays a doctor of ‘the brain,’ but has her own mental issues. She’s dressed in deep red gowns to offset her radiant gingerness. There’s a lot of her in this so far so that’s okay. She’s good so far in this. Still have so many fond memories of her in person. I will always be team widow.

I’m 2.5 eps deep - hour long eps, 8 or 10 of them. It’s a ship crossing the Atlantic from Europe to the US, and each character seems to have secrets. There’s a lost ship from the fleet, and they find it abandoned, except for … well I won’t spoil it but the mystery begins. I hope it’s not just a mystery for mystery’s sake like Lost. I hope there is a point to all of this. I think it’s about the Bermuda Triangle.

The ominous electronic soundtrack is overdone and seems a tad anachronistic but the theme song is a version of Slick’s White Rabbit (a personal anthem) so I’ll give the music a pass.

I’m not fully engaged in the mystery, only mildly interested. I only tune in for the widow scenes and the Cantonese speaking geisha.

The characters feel a bit forced but maybe that’s just their establishment is clunky. Everyone is speaking different languages - French, Cantonese, some Dutch language, German, Spanish, so subtitles are a must.

There’s that hierarchical division of wealth like in Titanic - the rich elite, the poor stowed below deck, the ship’s crew, and this adds the coal shovelers.

The jury is still out about a D00M recommendation. I must get further in before ruling on a verdict. I’ll keep watching to remember all those good times I had with the widow.

RE: 1899 - Greg - 11-19-2022

I was thinking of adding this to the watch rotation. Probably catch it tonight.

Does Mrs. DM know about the Widow?

RE: 1899 - Drunk Monk - 11-19-2022

Mrs DM never watched the Badlands beyond an ep or two, and only since that got us to Dublin. He started to watch a movie she was in but the subliminal sonics bothered her so she bailed.

That movie was Little Joe and she was right to bail. I suffered through it and was regretful…

RE: 1899 - Drunk Monk - 11-19-2022

5 eps deep and there’s only 8 so I might as well finish it. There better be some damn answers about wtf is going on.

The mysteries deepen. I’m getting more used to it now that several backstories have been revealed. Im starting to think there are logic gaps but I’m not paying that much attention to that. I do like how everyone speaks a different language so they can’t communicate with each other and we (the audience) know because we have subtitles

The Widow’s role is the keystone here. She’s pulling it off well.

RE: 1899 - Greg - 11-20-2022

Ooh, spooky. Caught Ep 01. Lots of triangles in this show. They remind me of the symbol of where you can find an AA meeting. I like the Easter Eggs which keep popping up especially the number 1011. I do like the fact that everyone is speaking different languages so it's hard to communicate. I don't think they put a lot of money into the show. They only have the one hallway. There is only one big room on the ship. I'm betting they reused the sets. Lots of people with scars as well. The company that made the main title sequence must be getting a lot of work because those effects seem really familiar. Although I did like the ship crossing over a ladies face to end it.

This had to be set in the past because no one who ever saw a horror movie would do the things these people are doing. I'm looking at you young man.

It's kind of interesting. We will keep watching

I miscounted. I was 4 eps deep. Ep 5 was a turning point - it takes a big leap into ... well, not really sure but it's a big leap. Much is revealed but little is explained. If anything, it get murkier, but at least there seems to be some underlying reason to all of madness. I'm inclined to believe it's some sort of time loop, that the ship's passengers are cursed to repeat the same horrors over and over. More key characters die, but are they really dead? Maybe it's all a hallucination of the widow's.

Anton Lesser, who I mistook for Mark Rylance in Andor appears. Lesser was great in Endeavour. They were both in Wolf Hall, which unfailingly put me to sleep every time I tried to watch it so it's an honest mistake.

RE: 1899 - Greg - 11-21-2022

Wake up.

Saw Ep02. More triangles. Step on that damn bug, for god's sake. Still curious about all the scars. A physical manifestation of something internal, especially with the captain.

RE: 1899 - Drunk Monk - 11-21-2022

E6: The best thing to do when the power goes out and you’re on a creepy ship is to split up and do stuff like search around by lamplight. Some big reveals in this ep and there does seem to be an explanation for what the heck is going on. My time loop theory wasn’t too far off the mark. And the creeping crude - the dark crystals - remind me of an old sci-fi about some stalagmites that were invading earth but I can’t recall the name of that now. Greg will be happy that one scar is explained, along with a family trauma.

E7: A huge revelation about the Widow (and I don’t mean the opening sex scene, which was rather tame). Things are falling into place. Many more die. We’re poised for the s1 finale next, but we’ll save that for later.

At this point, I’m enjoying this show although it’s not gripping me tightly. It has some intriguing stuff like the multi-lingual aspect (that forces me to pay attention because I just can’t listen - I gotta attend to the subs because they slip into other tongues without notice). Some of the soundtrack is overdone so I can’t tell if it’s the music or a sound the players actually hear. That’s a bit annoying because they hear a lot of stuff. And then there’s the Widow. I’ll always remember the thrill of sitting next to her at dinner at that posh Dublin restaurant. My life was blessed then…seems like another age…

Kinda intrigued by the book The Awakening by Kate Chopan. Anyone here read that?

RE: 1899 - Drunk Monk - 11-22-2022

And done. That was okay.

It does have a conclusion and everything makes sense in the end, more or less. I was close with my guess although I thought they were all in the asylum, not where they ended up. The McGuffin mainly worked for me because of the outro music. But it does all come into place at the end, and it’s conclusive. I don’t foresee a season 2.

I’m going to D00M recommend this but not strongly. It has its flaws but it also has some lovely surreal bits and I’m a sucker for surrealism, as you know.

RE: 1899 - Greg - 12-05-2022

Ep03 Still dark and moody and full of mystery. A mystery like if one ship is towing another ship and the first ship stops, what stops the second ship? it doesn't have any engines to slow. it has all the momentum. And one ship is in front of the other and yet when you leave the first ship to go the second ship how are you coming at it from the perpendicular?

Lots of mysteries without any clues. Why doesn't the guy with the blood on his face ever clean the blood off his face? At least put some neosporin on it. The backstory for the Chinese Woman playing a Japanese woman is pretty horrific. I don't know why the Widow an the Captain keep hanging out and obviously exploring dangerous places.

RE: 1899 - Greg - 12-07-2022

Ep04. This goddamn show better have some goddamn answers for all the goddamn questions it poses. I did like the back story for the legionaries. I really wish they could have built more hallways for the ship rather than just the one. It's repetitive. That kid should have got his comeuppance long ago. Although once i found out about the trick, I would sure as hell keep doing it.

RE: 1899 - Drunk Monk - 12-07-2022

All will be explained even the repetitive hallway (to some degree). Whether you’re satisfied with the answers or not is another matter. I was, although mostly because there was a conclusive answer, so I didn’t feel it just jerked me around for no reason.

RE: 1899 - Greg - 12-07-2022

The Hallway is Production Design decision in an effort to save money, which I understand. But they don't do enough to redress it to make it look like a different hallway. Come. Join me in the weeds of film talk.

RE: 1899 - Drunk Monk - 12-07-2022

Sure, sure, but there actually is a reason for it once you get to the end. Well, let's say you can reason out a reason for it, if your mind is so inclined.

Note that I'm biting my tongue here - I was going to bring up the outro song, but it would be a total spoiler, so I'll remain silent.

Now I'm betting Greg that you won't be satisfied with the conclusion. It's not a perfect solve, but it does work and accounts for everything.
